Tennessee and Talent myth

Care to elaborate?

No..I don't want to elaborate. Not because I am making stuff up, but I was told this in privacy, and will honor it.

Like I said...there are 3 sides to every story.

It is funny that Chow's contract at UCLA may not be honored, and he is "rumored" to maybe going back to USC. Funny how things work out?????

OK, but it would be interesting to hear the 3rd side and you could give it without revealing the source.

I understand that most will not believe me...since I will not tell what I heard. That is fine with me. I don't need VN's stamp of approval to make me feel better.

Let's just say that some people on here know the truth and keep their mouths/fingers shut. 90% of what I say/post on here is MY opinion, but the other 10% is the opinion of some VERY well known people that tell me things.....This is part of that 10%. I respect my friends, and will not talk in detail about what I was told. You would be suprised at a few of the people on this site.

I've noticed alot of comments about VT recruiting so I thought I would share what the current thought process is there.
1) Kids in Va. are growing up attending VT games just like kids in Tenn. These kids want to attend VT and Beamer is glad to have them.
2) They have backed off 5 stars because if you miss on a 5, someone else has already gotten the 4. They would rather have a medium 4 or high 3.(The aslo tend to be harder workers things come easy for a 5 star plus they jump to the NFL as soon as they can. Watch what happens at Florida next year.
3) They have backed off the tidewater and are concentrating on the Norther Va, Richmond area. They are selective about the type of kid because of the Vicks, Deangelo Hall and Jimmy williams types. 2 years ago he dismissed Brando Ore(ACC leading rusher) because of attitude and he was in a car that drugs were found. Zack Luckett was stripped of his scholarship for 2nd offense DUI but he was allowed to walk on after a one year suspension under many conditions. Beamer refuses to win with bad kids he would rather be a top 10 program than contend for a NC with bad kids.
4) He will graduate all but 1 senior, Virgil has a learning disabilty and has worked hard to stay eligible.
5) Last year VT hired an MMA fighter to help with new forms of physical fitness with a big emphasis on functional strength.
6) The Coordinators teach a strict technique set, regardless of how good you are if you do not play sound fundementals and technique you will not play. LB Jake Johnson 6 ft 2 220lbs with SEC speed started the first 4 games but was replaced because of bad fundementals. He played less than 40 snaps the rest of the year.
7) All of VT WRs where RBs in high school except for Danny Coale and all were forced to start last year as true freshman.
8) Beamer thinks his last 3 clasess are the best he has ever had at VT as far as quality football players and quality kids. This year maybe the best OL and DL class ever.

Hang in there Vol fans, Kiffin is a smart guy who learns from lossess he will build back the program but as you know 85 scholarship rule has change college FB forever. It will take several years to do it right; Beamer has been at it since 86 and is just getting it right. Since you kicked our butts in the Gator he has had only 3 years that he didnt have 10 wins. Beating you guys in Atlanta gave us a win over a admired program even though you are down a little it caught some kids attention that wouldn't otherwise take a look. Good Luck Vols..Go Hokies!

I respect that you want to keep it private, but is there anything you could say? Because I really don't understand the situation at all. I definitely got the feeling that he didn't have many friends at USC.

Look at it this way...if you were to recruit six 5-star quarterbacks, ten five-star running backs, and a dozen 5-star receivers you would probably end up with a number one ranked recruiting class. You would have zero linemen, linebackers, etc., and would probably lose a lot of football games.

Skill positions require talent - a certain level of God given ability. Linemen are big uglies that are big and ugly. They are fed and coached technique. Your line success relies very heavily on coaching and much less on the number of stars.

Many great big linemen have quickness and athleticism too. You'll find a lot of people who will disagree with you in the recruiting forum about stars not mattering.

I don't think Florida lost because of a talent disparity. I think they lost because they were thoroughly outplayed and out-coached. It happens.

One dimensional team playing a complete offensive unit. Florida's offense was Tebow and when he played against a team which matched up against his offense (talent wise) it was over. In other words, they didn't have to shut Florida's offense down just shut Tebow down and they did (IMO).

I believe he said mattered "much less" in regards to lineman. Historically star ratings have proven to be much less of an indicator for success at the next level than with the skill positions. In truth a great deal of this is that some of the big guys just haven't filled out yet.

I know he meant linemen and it would still get the game reaction from those that follow recruiting. It probably matters less than skill positions, but I'd still take several 4-5 star linemen in a class than a bunch of 3's and expect a staff to just coach em up. You can only coach up some players so much. The Sullins bros just don't have the size/talent to make a good SEC o-line.

I very much doubt many, including the poster you addressed, would really argue your point if put in those terms. I only want to reiterate that it's much more hit or miss with the guys in the trenches than elsewhere.

His post I quoted, which was in response to someone else's, would say otherwise.

Bingo! And the previous staff missed big on linemen hence the talent shortage at Tennessee.

It's not a myth.

End of story.

that is where i'm coming from also.

it is a www forum. there is no substantiation. a poster can claim the pope as his source but it changes nothing.

i just think it interesting to hear different opinions. it is up to the reader to decide what to believe, if anything.

if one wants the stamp of approval, one goes with the party line. but how dull is that?
