Tennessee and Talent myth

It's not? We won just as many as we lost, and could have easily won 1 more. Maybe we didn't challenge for the SEC Championship, but we were very competitive. Ask Nick Saban.
Competing for championships makes you competitive. Competing for fourth makes you Kentucky.

UF, Bama, LSU, and Ole Miss finished ahead of us. 5th in the SEC isn't something UT should brag about.

Ole Miss in a tie breaker since they killed us in their stadium. Both teams were .500 in conference. We finished second in the East.

I'm not bragging, just disagreeing that our talent eliminated us from competing in the league.

Considering UT was eliminated from competition in the SEC East in mid-October, UT didn't really compete in the East.

Out of 12 teams we finished fourth in the SEC. Was that due to coaching overcoming talent?

the only SEC win I truly believe was all coaching was UGA. We are as talented as USCjr and should beat UK/Vandy every year no matter who is in charge

You could say that about everyone in the conference since the title game was set the first week of November.

In a rebuilding year with our schedule and the players we lost, I say we had a very succesful season. Better than Saban could do in his 1st year.

I see a lot of threads on this site where people talk about Fulmer leaving the cupboard bare, and UT not having talent, etc...

But, you guys do realize that UT is probably one of the 30 most talented teams in the country right?

Go check the recruiting classes from 2006 to now. Pretty good talent in those classes except for 2008. The problem was development, not lack of talent.

That and a whole bunch of transfers.

So the fact that the 2008 class was mediocre, and most of the 2007 class is gone now, or underachieved = a gap in recruiting. Not really a lack of talent, more like a lack of players.

Seriously, look at VT's recruiting. Since 2006, they have 18 4* and 1 5* player on the roster.

In that same time, UT had 8 5* and 26 4* players. So, on paper, UT is much more talented than VT. All the transfers out, and some shoddy OL recruiting are the only things keeping UT from succeeding right now.

I made a OP like this a few days ago. Something doesn't add up.
Maybe we recruited the wrong players and not necessarily bad players.

excuses coming in 3,2,1. folks this will be my final post on this subject because i will flamed away anyway by the people that believe you can't question a . the sad thing about all the crap happening at tennessee these days is because nobody questioned fulmer to begin with. kiffin has made his own problecoachms here at tennessee. he came in bragging about he wouldn't be outworked and they would get better,

He clearly stated he wouldn't promise any wins or championships. What evidence do you have that anyone is working harder? And honestly, how does claiming he would work hard come across as bragging?

in my opinion one more win and a bowl appearance that we got crushed in isnt very good, but i guess alittle better. defense his dad didn't live up to the expectations and the great fans love to make excuses. that is the answer for everything is excuses. the same way it was for fulmer before finally getting him out of here 5 years to late. we have the allstar staff that isn't cutting it right now and in my opinion is way overpaid.

Who specifically is overpaid? The best OL coach in the country that essentially worked for free?

we have had major problems since lane took over on and off the field.

Name one. One MAJOR one.

last but not least now recruiting is tanking,

Class is ranked #11 with 8 or so spots to spare. Almost everyone ahead of us is nearly full. If the recruiting class really does tank, I'll be worried, but as of right now it looks OK. We look good at OL, WR, and DE. I'd like to add another DT, a linebacker, and a safety. Linebacker is the only position I feel like we haven't really addressed a need, although Michael Taylor looks to be a player.

which when you have thugs running around robbing and carrying guns well stuff like that causes problems. maybe everything will be ok, i really don't think so anymore though. i think in the end a more realistic outcome of all this is hamilton and kiffin will be gone at the end of the 2011 season. hope i'm wrong about all of this, but looking at the rest of the sec i don't think we get back on top.

We're second in the East in year 1. Who knows where Florida is heading with all this Urban Meyer stuff? They could pull another Ron Zook and it won't matter how much talent they have, they'll be mediocre. If we can make it to the SEC Championship game and give Bama another good game, everyone will jump on the Lane Train.

so go ahead and flame away. just remember lane was my choice for head coach.

Read above.

The NCAA allows FBS teams to have 85 players on scholarship at one time. We're in the mid 60's.

Is it really that difficult to figure out what the problem is?

Coaching. Handshaking. Windbreakers. Not enough QB Club meetings. Hostesses. I'll think of some more later.

How many UAT scholarship players logged game time this year compared to UT? I really have no idea, just curious.

I agree, but we still weren't competitive as far as winning the conference goes.

Reason to blame fulmer. He had zero discipline, terrible work ethic, and was a players coach.

I remember when Fulmer took over and started winning (including a beatdown of FL - people were saying "Fulmer for Governor" and so on) - it was felt that the team responded so much better to his coaching style as opposed to Majors' hardass ways. Then after 2001 when it started going south, people started saying "no discipline." Can't have it both ways.

Kiffin has a new plan for UT and that's that. I am sick of all these threads but starting a new one doesn't help.]

Amen!

Final point: Fulmer left the team bare due to his lack of discipline and attitude. He brought in 4/5*'s but coached them to 2/3* talent.

He had stopped bringing in as many 4/5*'s, hence '05, '08, etc. That and losing Cutcliffe, plus other teams improving. But this has all been said before. We're on the right track now, and will soon be back at the top, if our players will have sense enough to stay out of trouble.

Do you mean: Eric Berry, Chris Walker, Ben Martin, EJ Abrams-Ward, Lennon Creer, Ahmad Paige, Montario Hardesty, Gerald Jones, Denarius Moore, Chris Scott, Jacques McClendon, Dan Williams, Montori Hughes, Rico McCoy, Rod Wilks, Dennis Rogan, Lamarcus Thompson and Savion Frazier?

The ones in bold are irrelevant, half of the others aren't even SEC caliber players. Wilks has a scholly because of his brother.

To think that UCLA, Auburn, Ole Miss, or VT are superior to UT in terms of football talent is ridiculous.

There is a faction of the fan base that credits wins (and for some reason even close losses) to superior coaching. They then blame losses to a lack of talent.

Aside from being wrong which you are-- don't you mean patience in your heading by your picture??? Or are you talking about patients at a hospital or a doctors office??

I think that everyone of those teams were better and deeper on both lines and in their linebacker cores. We lost to UCLA and Auburn because Crompton was last years Crompton those games and had yet to turn the corner. UCLA and Auburn had much, much, much better quarterback play than we had those two games.
