The difference is that it is Fulmer's fault a turnaround is needed.
I think it was a combination of a few things. Firstly the 05 team just didn't have heart (if you don't include the LSU game). The 98 team did of course as did a few other teams, but teams with heart win in close games. Whether this is Fulmer's fault is debateable. Is it Fulmer's part that the offense was horrendous after Cutcliffe left is also debateable. You do have to give Fulmer credit for getting Cut back because had Fulmer been gone, Cutcliffe wouldnt have returned. I think the other issue was the way the 2001 and 2002 classes turned out. 2002 class was supposed to be loaded with talent NFL talent, yet they underachieved, and most of all were underdeveloped. This is probably because of coaching though, that is my fault with Fulmer. He has also failed to change with the game, and he's way too conservative. I do think though, that it's all about the close games, and had we won them last year we would have had only one loss on the season. We are always that close.
I really was trying to be upbeat about UT bball future, pointing out that you have something really good to look forward to next year and it turned into, yeah, but that just shows how much Fulmer sucks.
Its almost as though any positive for UT has to be dismissed by its fans because of the Fulmer factor. That or its used to point out that it would be even better if it weren't for Fulmer.
I don't know if heart the problem with the 2005 team. I'd blame it more on atrociously horrible offensive preparation. Having heart won't matter if your WR's can't catch, you have one inaccurate QB and one QB with a weak arm, and your top RB breaks his foot. Also, I don't think heart would have helped Sanders and Fulmer call plays any better.
Well I shouldn't say they didn't have heart, but rather they were overconfident (especially on offense with the recievers, Riggs, and Ainge). That probably led to a lack of preparation, and rather than taking games one at a time they looked too far ahead to the championship.
