Just wanted everyone's thoughts. Will Tennessee ever be a factor again in college football ??? Seriously ! Are we willing to put out the money needed to be a factor ???

Absolutely. Lets not paint with such broad strokes here. Tennessee will be back. Using terms like "ever" is a little over the top.

If the world ends in 2012...then no...but if not...yes

Why so doom and gloom?

Certainly not for the next 1000 years or so, Dooley and Kiffin have done too much damage. Maybe when the year 3000 comes along.

Definitely. Looking at the way our offense has played this season if we only had just a mediocre defense we could be 7-2 right now. Most of the older folks on here agree with me when I say that any new coach needs at least 4 years to prove himself. There's a good chance we can win out this season and also the bowl game. During the offseason the defense will have more time to learn the schemes and checks they need to be successful and our offense will only continue to improve.

I see us finishing strong this season and coming out next season as underestimated and putting a hurting on the teams who aren't ready for us.

GO VOLS!

If we hire the right coach, yes, within 3 years.

If we keep Dooley, no. Not until we replace him and then years after that.

If we hire some retread like Cutcliffe, probably not. Not until we replace him and then years after that.

I don't think it's so much that we're not willing to spend money (though that is a big part of it, our powers-that-be like bargains more than homeruns), but I think a large part of it is that the people making decisions, be it boosters or administrators just don't understand college football and what makes a good coach.

They don't realize you can't just hire a guy with a losing record or a guy with loads of question marks and not expect that stuff to carry over to your program. You can't base hiring decisions on how polite someone is or if they have a southern accent or who their daddy is or any of that garbage.

You have to make win/loss records and hard facts a priority. And there are a ton of coaches out there who have won everywhere they have been. But instead, we seem to make other, less important stuff into key decision making factors and hope the records are misleading. But coaches are rarely more than what their record says they are.

At the moment, Tennessee is not a factor at all. When Dooley is fired, Tennessee will become the best job available. If the right hire is made, Tennessee will become a factor again.

It's hard to believe that a mere 8 weeks ago we WERE a factor.. Top 25 ranking, ESPN College GameDay was here, front page of ESPN.com, being talked about nationally, the atmosphere was electric, and the stadium was jam packed..

Captain Cane and company have crapped it all away - but it just goes to show you that we CAN indeed be a factor if we can just string together a few big wins against the big boys in the SEC...

And IMO we aren't that far away from being a major factor in CFB. It's not like we've got a bunch of scrubs on the roster. We have the talent on BOTH sides of the ball to at least be relevant.

As others have said above, all we need is the RIGHT coach.

if hart is unwilling to make a move after this season it will be a decade before we will be worth a damn. our recruiting class is starting to look like fulmers before he was shown the door. this class will put us back for years if dooley is still here.

Tennessee will be back someday.Maybe it will be against Bama.I can see it now.A cool fall evening in late October.A hot shot coach on the rise will stick everything Saban is doing up his ARSE.Make him retire because Tennessee humiliated him and bama. That's my dream.

Yes, we will!! Alot of college programs have rough times. USC was horrible before Pete Carroll arrived.
Alabama was horrible before Saban arrived.
Oklahoma was horrible before Stoops arrived... Notre Dame was horible before Kelly arrived.

All of those programs are in the top 10 of ALL time college football programs but they had a period in which they were horrible, then with the right hire, they bounced back....

(1) The amount of players that we put in the NFL is tremendous, but due to poor recruiting and poor DEVELOPMENT of players, we have seen names of U.T. players called on draft day fall off tremendously.
This season, we will have Rivera, Lathers and Z. Rogers drafted. Then next season, the entire O-Line, Bray, Hunter, Patterson, and some D. Line people will be drafted.

(2) There are only 7 college football teams with at least 800 wins. We currently have 798 wins. That is elite.

(3) We are among the top in college bowl appearances.

(4) We are among the top in college bowl wins.....

We just need a better coach to develope the players that we have on the roster.

1. UT will be back on top.
2. The timing will depend on
a) Is Dooley replaced and by whom
b) If Dooley is retained will the fan base ever support him
