Tennessee #11 on Coaches Poll Greatest Programs of All Time

Flip us with Florida State imo. They didn't even start playing football until 1947 and weren't a remotely relevant program until the 1980s

Notre Dame should be higher. Like 2-3.

UGA is questionable at best to be on that list at all, much less ranked 14. They've accomplished almost nothing, except for a flash in the pan 40 years ago with an athletic freak and Derek Dooley's dad.

Any cfb convo has to start with Bama, then ND, Oklahoma isnt even top 5.

Tennessee and Miami are top 10. USC is higher. Texas should drop out ot top ten

dumb list.

Absolutely right, KB. All others of the Top 10 can make a case for their position. FSU doesn't have a case, if you're talking "Of All Time."

(and, p.s., I know they no longer wear Big Boy Pants, but Yale deserves at least honorable mention in the Top 25, for what they did in the first half-century of the sport ... I mean, they have twice as many legit national championships as Bama)

I agree with what others have said. I have no problem with the other teams ahead of Tennessee other than Florida State. IMO Tennessee at #10 is about right and I would have Miami in the top 10 as well.

I also agree with others regarding Notre Dame. I hate their guts but they absolutely SHOULD be ranked higher than 9. I would certainly have them ahead of Texas. Personally my list would be this...

1. Alabama
2. Oklahoma
3. Ohio State
4. Notre Dame
5. Michigan
6. Southern Cal
7. Miami
8. Nebraska
9. Texas
10. Tennessee

I agree, but to hear their fans talk........

Miami?! They were good for about a decade. They played every thug they could keep out of jail, benefited from a weak schedule every year and were allowed to play national championship-deciding games on their own home field.

No way should they be in anyone's top 10 if you're talking about the whole history of college football.

If it's about half of all-time, meaning the past 50 years or so, then sure, Oklahoma would definitely be up there. If it were really all-time, that would bump ND, Michigan, Tennessee up. Alabama wouldn't lose anything, but Oklahoma would drop. I don't think this is really based on the history of the sport, but rather on the history of those two polls.

edit: just noticed they listed Nebraska as big10 in a "history" poll. Heh.

Are we questionable as well? Were we nothing but a flash in the pan in the '90's?

Championships awarded since 1869:

UT - 7

UGA-6

Just because it happened before we(or at least I) was born(I'm 43), doesn't erase it from the history books. And the poll did say of all time.

That being said, Princeton has 28 championships, and Yale 27. I wouldn't put either in the top 10, but they deserve a mention.

Personally, I think Bama should be in the first slot, even though it pains me to admit it, and Notre Dame should be #2.

Stassen.com has the Vols with the 11th best winning percentage and 9th in career wins in NCAA history. However, if you don't start counting until 1926 (Neyland hired at UT), the Vols come in at 7th in winning pct and 3rd in overall wins.

Neither Miami or Florida State belongs in the top ten of GOAT CFB poll when neither team was relevant prior to the 80's.

Do y'all think GT should be top 25??? And do you think this is just based on stats or does history go into this? When I say history I mean coaches, awards named after coaches etc?

I think it's in the eye of the beholder. No two people or groups are gonna come up with the same list.

If you just want stats, it's easy to find the list of schools with the most wins. Or most claims to national titles. Or more bowl wins. Or most Heismans. Those stats should certainly all be part of the equation. But not all of it.

I think history and tradition and compelling storylines and conferences are all a part of it too. And the impact and contributions of the greatest coaches for each school, as well.

In short, it's gotta be a holistic thing. Which makes it really complicated. Which is why no two people will come up with the same "formula." There's really no exact right answer.

But there are wrong answers: like including Florida State in the Top 15 of an "All Time" list, when they didn't play football for more than half the game's history, and didn't become nationally significant until less than 40 years ago.

Then again, some people put these lists together weighting what happened recently much more heavily than what came before. I don't like doing it that way, but ESPN seem to love doing so.

Should Ga Tech be Top 25? Without carefully thinking through all the other teams and their relative merits, I'd say probably, yes. But I reserve the right to say I was wrong, later, because there are a LOT of great programs out there.

Go Vols!

The Coaches poll is only 66 years old, so there is naturally going to be some recency bias in these rankings.

I went through and looked at the top 16 teams compared to GT. For the most part GT beat those schools in the on field stats, winning %, bowl games, national championships etc. we did lose in the stats, like most NFL draft picks, Heisman winners (which the trophy is from a nex GT coach) ect. I'd take the on field stats over the other stuff any day of the week though. We also are very rich in history. If I'm not mistaken we were the first team in the south to win a national championship, the heisman trophy is named after John heisman (a coach from GT) Bobby Dodd was our coach and has an award for coach of the year. Frank Broyles is the assistant coach of the year award and he played and coached at GT. we have the oldest staium in college football. There's more of course but you get the point. I don't think we are a top team but we should be top 15 imo. UT should be better than some teams ahead of them as well.
