It's just a shorter way or saying it. Like we call Arkansas Arky, or Vanderbilt Vandy. Not an insult.

As someone who now lives in Texas. I just tell Longhorn fan's they were Mexicans when the real UT was founded and they can thank Volunteer Davy Crockett for their state.
