Tee Martin vs Peyton Manning

I've always credited Tee Martin as being a great leader on that team. And, while plenty of people note that Peyton did not win the championship, I'd be curious to know how much credit others thinks he should get for influencing the aforementioned super talented players to play at Tennessee? How did Peyton influence their work ethic?

Peyton had a lot to do with that national championship eventhough he didn't play on the team.

My thought has always been that losing PM helped UT become more of a team. They didn't look to him to win games any more and looked to each other. I also believe #27 had more to do with UT's heart that year than any other player. No one wanted to answer to Al after a loss.

Good points. They definately played as a team in true Tennessee tradition. I'd take that team anytime, any year!

Al was clearly a team leader... the kind that CPF needs for championships.

Do you think PM was a factor in UT's ability to recruit all those superstars? Do you think PM's strong work ethic helped influence the strong work ethic that teams had? Or, do you think they were more motivated to just prove they could win without their 'superstar'?

How about the young man that gave his life for our freedom. I can't remember his name but the University did a tribute to him at halftime of the Arky game. These are the hero's of this University and our Country!

which is why IMO, the only numbers that should be retired are our veterans. Just my two cents.

It's arbitrary. I just think it's goofy naming streets after guys under the age of 25 when there are ex-Presidents, Generals, community leaders etc that actually deserve the honor.

I also think it is ridiculous to name a street after an average quarterback but not reggie white.

I mean, who makes these decisions? Do they not realize that if they start naming streets after good players that they are going to run out of streets,.....and so it might be a better idea to only name a street after a legitimate superstar. I can deal with peyton manning pass. I can even deal with chamique holdsclaw drive. But Tee Martin Blvd. is flipping ridiculous. Tee Martin was the 98 vols version of Trent Dilfer. He was a serviceable QB. A street could be better named.

1. I think it's ridiculous to say that only vets can have their numbers retired. College football has almost nothing to do with the military. There was a particular period in this country's history where there was some good amount of cross over between the two in terms of football players being enlisted. That's basically been a non-issue since WWII. EXCELLENT college football players deserve their numbers retired, vets or not.

2. I agree with the idea that only "old timers" should have roads named after them. After all, there are only a finite amount of roads on campus, and with each "new" road there is a level of precedence. Do we have a Candace Parker Rd? Why not? What about a Bruce Pearl Rd? What about a Chris Loften Rd if we were to win the NCAA this year?

i understand what you're saying mullet, but since UT held onto that tradition for so long, it diminishes it now. If they are going to start retiring numbers #45 should have been retired long before #16.

While I'm a big Peyton fan, Tee did get us to the NC game in '98. What an AWESOME year! Tee was not lucky enough like Peyton to really make it big. Some people are better in college while some were good in college and outstanding in the Pros. However, some are outstanding in college and are terrible in the Pros.
Either you have it or you don't.
Some great players have gone through the Halls of the UT campus. There are possibly others through Vol history that should either have streets named after them on campus or have a Hall/Bldg. named after them.

Was this post meant to convey a coherent thought?

Luck had little to do with it. It is called talent and preparation and good ole hard work.

It just seem like all of the success Tennesse had after Peyton left is having me think everybody think Manning is the reason. We had sucess before Peyton people. I am not here to buy that theory. Tennessee has always talent(we was always winning at least 10 wins a year) Check the records of the years from 76-93.Manning was good but don't give him credit for something that was a tradition in the first place. Tell me why Manning chose the Vols in the first place. Ole Miss was where his dad went.Vols were winning

That was nice. The reminds me of the story about General Neyland, how he left coaching to go serve his country then came back to coach the Vols again. Yet in that same timeframe, my uncle, poor Tennessee farm boy, was KIA in Normandy in 1944 at age 25. He never made it back. Yet Neyland the hero. My uncle along with thousands of others served with bravery while there, some made it back, some not so lucky.
