Tee Martin receives UT HC endorsement from USC

Tee would be a great choice until he started 0-6 and things would get so awkward you could cut it with a knife.

And yet I see lots of people mentioning Venables also Smart seems to be doing ok at Georgia.

We are already being laughed at. You thing hiring a great recruiter and assistant, who just so happens to know what it takes to win a NC and knows how things should be done here would make it worse? :thud:

Winning a championship as a player and winning a championship as a coach are wildly different.

Also we already had a coach that was good at recruiting. How did that work out?

We need a coach that can actually coach on the biggest stage and can turn 3 star players into NFL draft picks.

I'd be happy enough if we decided on Tee, but with all due respect, Clay Helton is a QB guru and a strong offensive mind, and Sam Darnold is a stud. Tee only has two years there as OC, so hard to get an accurate reading on how good he really may be.

I understand your point and adore your ParrotHeadedness.

My counter is that USC has averaged 34.6 points per game with Tee as OC. He also recruited Darnold and got promoted thanks in part to the way he developed the offense around the kid. So, he's a former Broyles nominee for top assistant, a winner of best recruiter in the nation, and he personally brought in and developed the future number one pick in the NFL Draft. There are basically no valid knocks on him as a potential head coach other than that he hasn't done the job before, which is a catch-22 argument.

Also, this:

Tee Martin was the obvious choice as offensive coordinator at USC - Pac-12 Blog- ESPN

The same concerns being mentioned about him as a potential head coach cropped up when he was (finally) promoted to OC. All he did was shred opponents for two straight years.

Not sold on Tee Martin as the next Head Coach at UT and we as a fan base should be smart enough to know this after the experiments we've had over the last decade. Make a legit hire regardless of money and regardless of how long it takes.

The last coach wasn’t an experiment. He was the fourth or fifth choice on the list of candidates that met the criteria. He won 60% of his games in a weak BCS qualified conference.

Butch’s offense was DOA in the SEC without a magician at quarterback.

Gundy’s a no brainer, but even he is a risk, and unproven as a recruiter in the SEC. Ask Bielema how much easier it is recruiting in the Big Ten. Gundy on avg usually pulls in what... top 30 classes?

Maybe he can translate, but there is no guarantee, and who knows how that mullet will go over in the inner cities. Great for us country boys, but we make up the majority of the fan base and 10% of a college football roster. Can Gundy relate to the kids with mentors? Single moms who rely on help to survive because there is no male figure in the house?

I like Gundy, and fully support the hire. But after him- to say a coordinator is a bigger risk than someone with no SEC ties is a stretch. Sumlin is proven. Les is proven. Fulmer is proven. They’ve recruited the south and are parents love them.

We simply can't take another chance. We need a proven winner. If he comes here as OC, Assistant Head Coach, then great. And I'm not opposed to him one day becoming the head coach at UT. But this is not the time. We've hire a couple of nickel and dimers in Dooley and Butch, and can't afford to take another chance.

Everything is a chance at this point. Doubt anybody thought hiring Bob Shoop was taking a chance. We all thought it was a slam dunk hire that would bring us championships. Turned out to be one of the worst hires in program history.

Tee is ready and he’s the right guy imo. Go get him.

Who is that? Gundy is proven. Who else? Nobody. Patterson and Petersen aren’t coming. Martin has been credited with putting multiple WRs in the NFL.

Butch had plenty of HC experience and couldn’t cut it.

Don't know. Is he still married to her? Does his son live in the Knoxville area? I would be very happy if Tee is the new HC. Know it's a risk, but heck, he's a VFL. Welcome him home!

They are still married. Tee's first son is actually at Clemson now. He was a five-star recruit out of Oak Ridge who left the area after Butch Jones angered the recruit's mother, who is Tee's ex. Tee has said several times that he regrets not being in east Tennessee.

I would take Kiffin back first. He is proven way more than Tee. Hell I'd be willing to give Miles the job for 2 to 3 years as a stopgap.

Child. Rape.

There's nothing "snowflake" about the stench (rightly or wrongly) stuck to Schiano.

Get over his abilities.
We were right to revolt.

AV

To add....you do mean the barely .500 win percentage and multiple stories of players absolutely despising him and his methods in TB?

What has he done that tells you he's ready to be a HC at an elite football school? He's not well liked out there to begin with and his players have called him out for his playcalling. He's only in his 2nd year as an OC and isn't ready to be a big time FB coach yet. Even Peyton doesn't want him as our HC. Maybe 5 years down the road but not even close right now.

Bull$hit. You’re the same guy who said bench Dobbs for Dormady the last two years.

Peyton wanted Schiano. I love Peyton, but he also recommended Butch Jones to Dave Hart. Get off your high horse.

The article says "Sources". What sources? This is a BS article. Unless I see video or hear audio, it DID NOT happen.

About as solid as sources claiming his wife prevented him from coming here. You guys bought into Butch’s game. Admit it.

Tee a good coordinator at USC for now. Not nearly ready for a coaching job in the SEC. Love Tee, but he's not ready. The same snowflakes who melted at the hiring of a great coach in Greg Schiano now support hires such as Tee Martin and Les Miles. Wow. No wonder our school is in such a mess. Currie's biggest mistake was bowing to the snowflakes and uninformed whiners.

I totally agree with you.

Tee - HC
Fulmer mentor to Tee
Steele - DC
Witten
complete your list with other VFL's - would love this

the good thing about this too is if it doesn't work out.. the fanbase wouldn't go all crazy because we gave it a try with former vols - worth a shot... seriously fan base would get behind this even knowing it's a risk taken

Unless your name is Urban or Saban, there are no guarantees in college football these days.

Agreed.

Saban can beat you with his players, and he's certain he can take your players and beat his. So let's offer him 12 mil/yr and put him to the test. :)

I'm torn. I want Tee back really bad, and think recruits would eat it up. I'm not sure a mullet is what recruits are attracted to...maybe I'm wrong. I would rather have Tee, then Lane if Tee wouldn't come. But if Peyton is behind Gundy, hard for me to argue. ANY are better than Schiano, so I'll be quiet this time lol

But he's not ready. Not even close. He's not even a really good OC right now. Right now he has no clue how to run the daily in's and out's as a HC. He hasn't learned under a great HC on how you do the right things and doing it the right way.

What are you talking about? He’s coordinating the 13th most productive offense in the country. Did you see what his offense did last year in the Rose Bowl, the adjustments he continually made in that game to wrest momentum back more than once from Penn State to win that game?

Also, Tee is a semi-finalist this year the Frank Broyles Award which is for the best assistant coach in the country.

Come on man. There are a ton of Coordinators, even position coaches who have taken over programs with no head coaching experience and have done outstanding jobs.....Richt, Fulmer, Swinney, Smart, Riley, etc, etc....

Go get Tee and let’s roll.

Its not a coincidence that the guys that are Dobbs and Guarantano's biggest critics are the ones that have been most vocal when Tee, Rodgers, or Sumlin have been mentioned as candidates.

You're out of touch with the kids these days. The mullet is IN!
