we can always find reasons to not like any hire. Heck if Saban expressed interest in this job we'd have folks complaining.

my goodness.

Tee has had plenty of time to develop as a coach, and he'll have his old coach on campus for administrative help. I believe in this hire.

Yeah, that what we need at this point.....no head coaching experience so lets be the guinea pig experiment and see if it works. Afraid not!!!!!!

You guys that think Gruden is/was a pipe dream have not been paying attention. The Sunday after the South Carolina Loss, Cindy Gruden and Vicky Fulmer spent the day together in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Why do you think there was so much uproar from the boosters (other than Haslam) when the Schiano hire leaked. They thought the plan was to announce Jon last Sunday. The powers at UT met with Gruden 3 times. Once hat the resort in Charlotte prior to his calling the panthers game on Monday night and twice in Tampa which 3 local news outlets reported.

He may not ever coach at UT but to say in the last 6 weeks that nothing was going on is just not true.
What resort in Charlotte?

This is a big mess for a first-time HC to step into. That being said Tee called a great game yesterday. Sometimes when you hire a great coordinator as HC, they lose some effectiveness if they don't call plays from the sideline. Would Tee call plays from the sideline? If not, who is his play caller?

Never ceases to amaze me how many people are willing to kiss the Holy Sphincter of a guy with a career .541 record, and whose claim to fame is reading a teleprompter and making stupid faces. Gruden sucks out loud, and anyone that wants that piece of garbage here needs to have their head examined.

You do realize a 0.541 NFL record is in the top 25% of all NFL coaches smdh

I think there is only one guy Tee would join as OC that's lane Kiffin . Kiffin gave Tee his first big time job and that's a big deal for Tee

I could see that, but UT will never, ever hire Lane Kiffin in any capacity with Fulmer at the helm. JMHO. I don't think Fulmer has a grudge against Lane because he replaced him, I personally think it has much more to do with how Lane left UT. Fulmer could never overlook that.

If they decide to roll the dice and take a chance on a young up and coming coach, it should be Tee.

With CPF in charge on the hill, Tee will have more support than anyone else. I think Phil will look at Tee like he would his own son and give the very best advice when asked and pointers when he doesn't. Tee can make his own football decisions, it's the administrative part where CFP will be a major asset. The one thing BJ did leave us with is a good program with regards to academics and other organized programs. Tennessee paid big money for this and they should keep what is clearly working. Bring back Antone Davis and other qualified Vols to take care of the ancillary programs so, Tee can focus his main task of developing a championship team. I have no doubt that when the top two guys have the same vision, understand each other, and understand the fan base, the end result will be absolutely remarkable.

Bringing Phil back simply feels right. Hearing him talk again, in an instant, brought back the feelings of having a direction. He's one of us and I think we had lost that feeling of a true Tennessee family. Tee is one of us and hiring him will feel right. Hire a good supporting staff of coaches and he'll be successful.

In Phil we trust. Go Vols.

Maybe I've just caught a case of the "Rainbows & Butterflies" delusion, but I can see a Gruden HC, Martin OC/HCIW, ??? DC package. Gruden comes in as CEO for 3 to 5 years, with Martin as the OC / Recruiting Coordinator. Then Gruden sails off into the sunset as a VFL hero, and Martin picks up right where JG left off.

Personally, I think Coach Fulmer would approve of that package deal.

Go Vols.

The HCIW concept doesn’t work and definitely can’t in conjunction with hiring a HC at the SAME TIME. Requires suppression of personal choice and ambition which are huge components of a good HC. A HCIW requires 3 different parties adhere to a predetermined end date and leaves no room for second guessing for any of them. Let’s take your proposal. Gruden signs on to to coach a max 3-4 seasons. His EMPLOYER picks the guy that’s going to succeed him. Already a disconnect. Gruden would want to pick his own OC and human nature would buck it being Tee. But in our fantasy, he appoints Tee and the other staff members fall in place perfectly with no outer ambition whatsoever. Gruden bears the brunt of inevitable grumbling and second guessing from the peanut gallery of now famous fans, in his first two seasons. Year 3 the fruit of his labour and he’s looking at the end date in sight...he recalibrates. Maybe he hints at staying year or more past that mandated end date and his bosses aren’t displeased in the least. In the meantime Tee is kicking azz at OC and becoming a name to consider for coaching jobs bigger than Georgia Southern. He’s suddenly looking at waiting another 2-3 seasons and trusting that Gruden won’t recalibrate AGAIN. Doesn’t work when you try to engineer it. Only way it does work is when you have a HC at the top of his game who knows his own end date and shares it with his employer. Has to come from him! A Saban can pick his successor. A guy we haven’t even hired can’t have his successor picked out before his introductory PC.

Fulmer doesn’t tolerate nonsense and nonsense is what Kiffin exudes.

Solid post. Solid logic. I have a different opinion on Gruden. I think he was contacted, was interested, and then saw the drama unfolding in the AD. He either decided or was advised to sit tight and let it play out. With Coach Fulmer emerging as the Interim AD, I think if Gruden was ever a serious candidate, it's now. If not, I expect to hear something from the Gruden camp this weekend, or NLT Monday.

Tee? Again, I agree with your opinion. That's why having him here for a year or three as the OC would tell us if he's the right man to take the helm when Gruden is ready to retire.

The one thing I am absolutely certain of...well, two things...is that (a) UT has the right man running the AD and coaching search, and (b) it ain't over with the Haslam clan.

Forewarned is forearmed.

Go Vols.

I tend to think Currie never really contacted anyone other than Schiano. That was his number one guy at KState and he never changed his list. Thus his feeling confident and cocky the entire time knowing he had everything already taken care of.

If we want the USC offense then maybe Tee should bring the QB with him. Don’t forget that USC has the top NFL prospect. Not sure how much of that was there out of HS and how much Tee helped develop.

Exactly. I remember the Arkie game. Phil took the ball out of Tee's hands (Couldn't hit the barn) and gave it to the OLINE & Travis Henry.

You lost me when you mentioned Gruden. I've begun to despise the name.

As for Tee, I'm torn. We could catch lightning in a bottle and grab the next star head coach or we could condemn the program to another decade of mediocrity. I so very much want a proven head coach for the quickest turn around, but given the state of the program and the damage to the brand, we may have few choices better than taking a shot with Tee.

What I'm hoping is that Fulmer is revisiting every candidate from Peterson on down....but making that man the clear #1 target. My hope is the AD change will make a proven coach reconsider and we don't have to take a chance on a coordinator who may or may not be in full control of the offense we are seeing at USC.

I couldn't agree more with your comment on Gruden. Had he any particular feelings for U.T., he would have shut down the nonsense immediately. Instead, he massaged his ego with the stupidity of some tee-shirt fans.

As for Currie, he suffered the same problem his former boss and mentor suffered--no serious football coach took either one seriously. Phil may have problems, but that isn't one. He was a helluva recruiter. I suspect that will serve him well in the search.
