While i hope he one day ends up being the coach, I would have to think that if Phil leaves before that opportunity presents itself, it would come down to Phil's replacement. As long as Pruitt does well here and rebuilds the program to double digit wins per year and competing for SEC Titles, Phil ain't getting touched.
You can be a successful head coach without having been a coordinator. See Dabo Swinney, PJ Fleck, Ed Orgeron, Herm Edwards, Urban Meyer, and Jim Harbaugh - for example. It's also looking like Joe Judge will be a HC soon.
