Tee & Former Vols sound off on blackjerseys

The easiest way to see grown men cry like babies is to wear a black jersey.

Ray Mears first coined the phrase Big Orange, John Ward used it announcing games.

We were the Volunteers before the coined phrase and we will be the Volunteers long after the crying stops.

The black was fine with me for halloween, I would love to see a new look uniform.

Had the same seats 42 years; we're very traditional in our love for the Vols, but Saturday night was the most electric run through the "T" I've ever seen! So happy for the team, and BTW, they beat the crap out of SClite

Looks like everyone liked the black jerseys!! Black pants didnt arive in time?? Hmmmm, could we see a full black uni in the future??? :whistling:

Now all black would have been great. Black pants with orange stripes--shirts with some orange trim--and BLACK HELMETS with the orange T. That is what my old high school unis looked like. SPHS Pirates---the coach was a UT player from 1929, the late L.P. Beene--Tennessee Hall Of Famer.

We can wear <insert color> as long as we win. The only tradition I care about is a winning tradition. Record books are black and white.

CLK has said it over and over. It's about the kids.

The Players
The Recruits

EVERYTHING he does is about getting 17-18 year old football players across the country to want to play football at UT.

I've followed UT football since the 70's, and I love the traditions. I also watched us embrace all of those traditions and sink into obscurity the last four years.

I'll put my preferences on hold for a while and see what happens.

Get your popcorn ready !

UT could come out in pink and I wouldn't care as long as they won.

With all the stuff that goes on for cancer awareness in October (not that it's a bad thing), that day could be closer than you think.

I would not be surpised if in the near future, some team wears pink and white jerseys.

When I turned on ESPN, I thought it was pretty sweet when I saw them running out there on black. These "gimmicks" can be pretty cool, as long as they stick to once a year or even less frequent than that, like Notre Dame's green jerseys.

Easily one of the most intelligent posts I've seen on VN.

Not only did the players and recruits love it, it energized the crowd immediately. We need the crowd in the game and that is an instant "on" for the crowd.

Note that we created 2 turnovers in the first four minutes... players pumped up, ready to play.

We won. Let's get over it.

A little history lesson. Our colors were decided in 1891. They came from the Common American Daisy that grew in abundance on The Hill. Since 1924, we have been playing in a variation of the Orange and White uniform. As for a selling point, we tell these kids about our deep traditions at UT and that they need to be a part of that, but in the same breath you want to change one the of traditions that sets us apart from every other program. If a kid doesnt want to play for UT because we dont wear black unis, then the hell with them. Let them play for another team. They get a free ride, they will wear what ever uniform they are told to wear and they will like it or they will ride the pine.

By the same accord if all of your stud players (Berry, Hardesty) and the rest of the team are asking for the jerseys... what do you do?

CLK said... repeatedly... it is a player's game. It was Halloween. What can you people not understand?

Not to mention the WOO! while singing Rocky Top... (We didn't do that when I was there from 78-83) or for that matter.. singing Rocky Top (A song that didn't exist before 1967) Yup... traditions can be started.. even in one's own lilfetime.

Most pro teams are wearing throw-back uniforms for various games this season. This was simply our throw-back to the 20s. I thought they looked great and the kids seemed excited to wear them. Bring them back for another game with black pants.

This is big orange country. Some things you don't mess with. School colors is one of them. Orange and white, orange and white, orange and white, etc.

LOL @ the ruination caused by the black jerseys. So many meltdowns. Are you one of the ones who walked out of the stadium and cutoff their VASF donations after seeing the jerseys like samvol and sargegolf? lollerskates.

UT wearing black jerseys is being discussed on TWO message boards that deal with Ohio high school sports.

I'd say the desired effect is there. Love them or hate them, people across the country are talking.

I gotta say that I was not totally in favor of the black jerseys at first, but it did create a lot of excitement and will help in recruiting. Change is going to happen whether people like it or not.
