Ted Meline and Marsalis Teague move to Defensive back

Sab, you're off your game. I'm sure you'll get in form by midseason. :)

Good move, though?

I definitely am. Didn't see the discussion anywhere. I'm sure it's hidden in some thread.

Yeah, I'll be back to my former form soon.

Writing was on the wall for this one. I certainly didn't see Teague or Meline at WR and I took some flack for it along the way.

I'm gonna go ahead and call it.

Teague will be an All-Conference CB by the time he graduates.

Dooley talked about it in his presser this afternoon.

It seems like a good move to me. Needed depth at DB and, apparently, we've got some talent at WR in the works.

There was a thread on this but it might have been moved. So I guess it was an honest mistake :)

I think this is a great move.

Teague is a great athlete and should excel. Meline had db written all over him coming out of high school.

Only question is how tall is Meline?

Teague is too talented to sit the bench. He will find the field. Could be the surprise of the year.

This is my first Post on here so bare with me, I think moving Marsalis Teague isnt a great idea and i hope it doesnt stick. I know we are weak at DB but the kid is so fluid and has really great hands. Teague probly was my favorite WR target last yr maybe even more than D Moore. I just guess all we can do is leave it up to Dooley, and Trust. Go Rocky Top

The underlying thing that gets me excited is that if Milton, Hunter, and Rogers havnt been really impressive, this move wouldnt have happened. Watch out for them...

Completely agree with you there. I think it said in the article that Sab posted about how high school QB's are usually the best athlete on the team and can easily translate over to the defensive backfield. When hearing that and thinking about it I for some reason think of Joe Haden for Florida. I'm pretty sure he was a high school QB and was recruited as one for UF, but was switched to DB and flourished there. I can see Teague with the same kind of skills. Not saying he will be a first round draft pick at CB some day (like Haden), but I do think he will be a great All-SEC CB for UT.

It is also good that Teague has great ball skills...def cant hurt. Makes him a good Nickel and Dime guy already.

I get the Teague move and love it....I really don't get the Meline move but it could work out pretty well in the end

Meline wanted to play safety anyway in college. He played there in HS. Basically same thing as Teague, just a year earlier.

Teague was an excellent db in high school but was limited due to the fact he was a qb. I think he will flourish on the defensive side of the ball. Tifwiw but Monte wanted him badly on defense.

The talent and depth we have at WR this year is sickening. It is easily the strongest position on the field. Meline was a no-brainer, but given the skill of Teague in the slot and his quickness (Gerald Jones, self-professed) it is very interesting that there isn't room for him. We do have a need at DB, but not a pressing one IMO. There is a talent dropoff after the starters, but numbers are about the same as any other school.

Teague is a playmaker - plain and simple. With the ball in his hands, he's something else to watch. Anybody who's watched film on him and/or seen him in person can agree with this. With that said, he'll make a great CB. He's extremly fluid with his hips - he can shift on a dime. The speed, as mentioned before, is there with some more to spare. What'll help him the most, though, is his agility. This kind of plays back into the fluid hips explanation. He'll excell in the secondary, and after fall camp breaks I wouldn't be surprised to see him over Gordon.

5 CB: Evans, Gordon, Fleming, Raines, Anderson (Oliver- out)
4 S: Jackson, Waggner, Wilks, Sapp (+Brewer)

We could definitely use some more help back there, especially if Lofton and Dixon don't qualify. I wonder if the coaches will make this change permanent. I'd hate for those guys to have to move back after spending the entire year working with the secondary. But then again, Jones and Moore will be gone next year, so that means they'd pretty much have to. We'll be down to 4 returning WRs in 2011 – Z. Rogers, D. Rogers, Hunter, Milton. I'm not sure we lose anyone from our secondary.

Our DB haul from this year's class is looking promising. Better than WR it seems. So thinking longterm, I'd say move Meline to CB and keep Teague in the slot. Give him as many reps behind Jones as possible so that he's prepared to hold down that starting spot in 2011. Sign 2 WRs to help replentish the depth. Really, I'd like to be 9 deep. There's just too many concerns on the DL and just about everywhere else to be worried about that right now.

Agreed about the D line. But let the coaches do their jobs. They know what is best for this team and what is best for each individual player. That is what they are paid to do. If he wants Meline and Teague as DB's, then more power to him. I trust him to make the best decision for this program. Heck. none of us have even seen this team except for a few spring practices and the O&W game.....so stop speculating and just let it be. GO VOLS!

So what spots do we expect them to play?

Off the top of my head I would say Teague appears to be good CB size while Meline has the rangey FS look to him...but I think both are good enough to play either...

I wouldn't be surprised to see Teague nab a spot at CB and stay there for the rest of his career while Meline moves back to offense (after Loften qualifies and we bring in Walls and Martin next year) and becomes a slot receiver to complement the outside threats (Rogers, Hunter, Milton)

I think this could be a good move as long as both players buy into it and are commited to being the best at that position.

as an alum of the same school as teague it sure is nice to see all the love for him on here...he was an outstanding high school quarterback...i personally thought he should have started every game last year at wr

well then obviously i dont want him on defense. im prepared to negate the use of any and all logic because i hate anything with the word "kiffin" in it and i certainly dont value any opinions from said word. Monte couldnt cover the spread and is overrated

I hope Teague stays at DB and proves to be a "Ronde Barber" type career

teague can Probably be what Monte kiffin envisioned for nichell Robey when we were going to get a commitment from him
