There has been a lot of discussion about whether Tennessee was a better or worse team this year compared to last year.

Some point to we had more closer losses last year as an argument that there was no improvement this year compared to the worst season in UT history. To these fans moral victories matter.

Others point to better overall record this year and the fact we won two SEC games as underdogs against teams that had impressive bowl wins.

What do the stats tell you?

For me, it tells me regardless of how you analyze it, the lack of talent on the team compared to the competition is an issue. Even so, there will be those that will look at Lyle Butch Jones recruiting rankings to make an argument against what others see with their own eyes.

Stats reveal strengths and opportunity. Unfortunately most negavols will see only the bad side, they didn't take statistics in school, so, this as well been greek......see what I did there?

You should definitely bring the light of your wisdom and knowledge of statistics to the negavols.

JP's first goal was to be stronger in the front seven. We gave up fewer yards on the ground, on first and second downs. But, this leads into UT's weakness from day one. Inexperience in the secondary. So, naturally, we gave up more through the air. Teams did not even need to throw against us,to win, last season. Offensive turnovers and penalties increased. That hurts. I was expecting our offense to be better at protecting the football, and for us to be more disciplined on both sides of the ball. JP made the defense stouter, up front, this season. Using the same guys that gave up huge chunks in 2017, with Botch.
I believe our secondary will shine next season, with some added talent, and a year of experience and coaching. JP has made it a point to shore up the d line, and o line. Being able to run the ball, possess the ball, and move the chains, will compliment the defense by giving them much needed rest. But, turnovers and penalties need to be addressed. That is a direct reflection on coaching.

We improved in almost every category. Unfortunately we still finished 5-7 but you could see spurts of how good the team could be with games like Auburn and Kentucky and how bad they could be with games like Missouri and Vandy. The categories that killed us this year were tackles for loss and our passing defense. Pruitt has recruited better OL and DBs to try to improve those areas. I like the LBs that he has brought in with Peterson and Crouch but we also need more aggressive DL. A better pass rush will help improve the passing defense.

You’re implying that you can, with reasonable accuracy, verify improvement with these stats? And I probably lean more towards the “sunshine pumper” faction.

Our players are allowed to get treatments and surgeries now so we’ll see less injuries under Pruitt than Butch.

The Vanderbilt game showed me that Lyle's "5-star hearts" were vastly overrated. They played like 1-star or no-star hearts in that game - especially the second half. It was rumored that the players "....didn't want to go to a crappy bowl game anyway". If that rumor isn't true, it doesn't dismiss the fact that they sure played like they didn't want to go bowling. Stats reveal many things - second effort, tenacity, perseverance, tenaciousness, etc. aren't any of them.

I don’t disagree that there seems to be improvement. My only issue is that the assertion of the incomplete and static stats given was a measurement by where only the educated could see improvement. Clearly anyone that excelled in statistics would realize that the information given is to incomplete to make any assertion to the improvement or decline in performance of the football team.
