Whew!!! I just woke up and tired already. A rant in search of a thought. I guess a summary would be to fire Dooley and Chaney, and need a running game and kicker.
Wouldn't it be great to fire the coaching staff and start all over again? Brilliant.
you need to be able to run the ball period if you cant do both you dont win championships period if you cant stop the run in the trenches you dont win period you can pass all you want a good defense and coaching will put 6 dbs and stop your pass thats where the run comes in you have to be balanced we are not the colts with peyton manning i hate when people think pass pass pass this is the SEC you have to run the BALL yes bray rogers hunter are good but if you cant run the ball you cant run clock and keep the defense guessing if the o-line can run block not zone block i hate channey run game its a zone scheme you need a back with vision we dont have a back with vision or a o-line that can block SEC d-line in a zone scheme sorry channey needs to stay to help bray and recievers we need a new run scheme that compliments our pass game there hasnt been one bcs or sec champ win with the pass pass pass and hope to beat the other team with offense its in the trenches and a back that that can hold the ball wear a defense down and hit the homerun from time to time we have most of the pieces of the puzzle but the main pieces we need to see the picture are missing 1. coaching not a new head coach dolley was left with nothing and making it something takes time need new offense cord that can run the ball and pass 60-40 pass run our recievers are to good to not get the ball we got the running coach defense looks good on the coaching need some bodies on the dline and secondary need to have a 2 deep line that you cant tell who is in the game just busting heads and not getting burnt in the secondary we are close just need the peices tennessee needs a kicking coach or kicker tyhe kid needs coaching sorry but i was a kicker in college and i was a running back the kid needs coaching he has the leg but no technique i could kick better than this kid seriously thats what i have to say about people that is pass pass pass we are not going to win in the sec with pass pass pass we need a running back, dline homerun player and a playmaker on def that wins ball games
He's talking about Croom. Dude needs to go watch Crooms senior tape, and see if he still thinks he is a 4.8. He is at least as fast as Da'Rick.
Nope. A guy who is significantly smaller than Croom. I read more about some other camps where he ran a 4.5 (which means 4.6).
I am with the guy who talked about track speed in the speed discussions in the sense that 40 times are incredibly unreliable.
I would say that our coaches are not going to recruit a slow guy, but 4.7 or 4.8 in the 40 is not going to get it done in the SEC for WR, CB or S. It is fine for a TE or a LB (not ideal) and it would be burning it up for a QB or OL/DL.
we don't have any "burners" in the truest sense that i'm aware of, and by that i mean measureable hauling-arse guys. (highlight reels and eyeballs can be very deceiving, especially when there's bias involved) for starters i think most people don't understand how rare "those" guys really are; genuine football players that are that fast. Fastest time i've found hunter running the 100m is a 10.99. Hunter is not a burner...but does anybody think he's "too slow"? Me neither. Fastest 100m i know of by howard is an 11.02. Burner? No. Fast enough to be a helluva football player? Yep. Here's some nfl combine times to consider:
Aj green-4.50
dexter mccluster-4.58
mark ingram-4.62
jerry rice - 4.7
i'd take any of 'em...you? Think of being a good football player as a sum of attributes. If somebody is fast as hell then that's a great, wonderful attribute. If you're a wr and can't catch or a db that can't tackle running a 10.3 isn't that big a help. (kenny o'neal anyone?) if you're full-up on all the other positive attributes you can skate by with less speed. (bill bates) enough speed can cover some flaws. (deon sanders wasn't that great a tackler) if you think about it the vast majority of good football players are "fast enough" and also have the football "skills" that apply to whatever position they play. It's not all that different than strength. There's lots of guys that can bench a bus but aren't particularly good lineman. Sure doesn't hurt though.
I just get a little frustrated when i see guys with "good" speed described in nearly the same class as w gault or t mcdaniel. (just to keep it in the vol family) those cats were the real deal in speed.

Was trying to keep it more recent but yeah. Also, last years NFL rushing champ, our own Arian Foster, layed down a 4.69 and a 4.73 for the coaches on his pro day. (that almost certainly means it would have been slower still at Indy) Would he love to be able to run a 4.3? Absolutely. He's managing to get by just fine it seems anyway.![]()
There aren't many Bo Jackson's on the planet as of ever! He reportedly clocked a 4.12 40 time, but Bo also had great vision and power. Deion Sanders ran a 4.21 in 89 combine and Donte' Stallworth has been clocked at 4.22. Ahmad Carrol ran a 4.23 if I remember right and Joey Galloway ran a 4.18. Coker's time is 4.28 low and averages 4.38 or 37. Anyways, there are some players with exceptional speed but having vision and being able to change direction is what makes a great back or receiver, not just speed. The difference between a 4.1 and a 4.5 if it were a footrace to the finish line is not a lot of separation. When I think of speed at Tennessee I think of Willie Gault. When I think of someone who knew how to adjust and change direction I think of Donte' Stallworth. Next year I'll be thinking Justin Hunter!
What's funny is I was asking for this when I first joined this board. They were crucifying me over the saying we needed to overhaul Lucas Taylor, Josh Briscoe, and the dreaded Austin Rogers. I then said we shouldn't even recruit his brother posters went ballistic. Zach Rogers was supposed to be the monster from midway. He was soooo much better than his brother. Got to be kiddin me. I said Gerald Jones shouldn't be the feature WR but everyone said he's so much better than DMo. Half of the posters on here loved these players and were just drinking the orange kool aid while Florida was scraping our asses with nothing but speed. I was saying we need some speed the other posters were saying little guys don't fit our system. But love little DY don't they. Hahahahahahahaha my have things change.
I never understood why you got killed on the Austin Rogers stuff.
