Phillips for certain. Kongbo has the ceiling for it.

Maybe Picou has the lights come on? He was pretty highly regarded as a recruit.

I knew I was missing one. Phillips could be great, I just hope he gets more of a shot at DE since we needed him at DT last year (until he got hurt) and need him at DT now. Kongbo, Taylor, Phillips, Smith, Mixon (upperclassmen)...I like our chances.

Picou is a DT, but Strip has always had good things to say about him. He's just going to have to get stronger and have some great technique since his shorter frame won't allow him to just be a big bodied run stuffer (6'1, 280 currently).

Um, DK Jr. will only get better and Jumper has played lights out since being thrown into the lion's den, leading the Vols in total tackles. Those two starting next year are something to be very excited about.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one. Jumper gives it everything he's got but I've not seen anything to get excited about. He might get better but I'll have to see it on the field first.

If memory serves Picou was recruited as a DE, but other than Barnett, nobody on the UT roster is listed as a DE.

Unfortunately, he's been tossed into the fire as a DT.

You are correct, none of them are listed as DE except Barnett. I've noticed that too and it's a little frustrating when trying to figure out who plays what if someone isn't familiar with the names on our team already. But honestly I think that's just a lapse of the UT media dept. We know who is supposed to be a DE and who is supposed to be a DT, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) our depth issues at DT has made some DE's play DT from time to time including Barnett.

Based on Picou's recruiting profile from high school I'm pretty sure he was meant to stay at DT. It's possible you could be getting him confused with Butcher, as he was recruited to play DE but has since been practicing with the DTs. Hopefully we get to see some of his rage next Saturday.

yep, Picou was always DT. Butcher moved to DT, which is odd since the biggest criticism at end was that he is undersized.

I am not sure if all upper classman on the O-line is good or bad... these guys are not improving and you can't teach an old dog new tricks

I think the criticism of him being undersized at DE is from a length perspective, not a weight perspective. I don't think he has ideal length to play DE.

I guess we'll find out next year. I assume he's redshirting this year.

I'll be stunned if Butcher plays with any effectiveness at DT. 6'2, 275?? Just not big enough, nor athletic enough IMO.

Speaking of Butcher what's his status? I haven't seen him play and figured with the injuries piling up at DT we would have seen him.

When Pro Football Focus grades Tennessee games, he's consistently one of the highest graded players. So, he's shown it on the field, with all due respect. I've been a harsh critic of him as well, but he's ballin.

One of the Tennessee sites (Rocky Top Insider maybe?) had an article today saying that it's nearly certain he'll get a lot of snaps against USCe. We'll see.

I don't know why you don't think he's not athletic enough. We have nothing to base that off of except his highlights from high school and he pretty damn athletic in those. As far as size, have you heard of Aaron Donald? He's 6'1 285 and had 11 sacks last year as a DT for the Rams. I'm not implying that Butcher=Donald by any means, but from a size perspective, 6'2 275 at DT can definitely work. This is Butchers first year playing, give the man a chance to play a down before you write him off.

I'd like to see the guy in action just to see how he performs. High energy with a good motor was how he was depicted at recruitment. You never know until they see the field.

Tuttle has shown the ability to penetrate and give chase in the backfield despite being set back by severe injury last year. On the other side, McKenzie has not lived up to the hype we gave him prior to his recruitment. It just goes to show that the real proof of a player's ability is demonstrated in live action.

Just giving my opinion, just don't see it. Donald is a special talent, not really an appropriate comparison IMO. Let's see what happens.
