'26 TE Lincoln Watkins (Kentucky Commit)

I get that we want a TE in this class, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. TE is a pretty easy position to fill in the portal.
Much like we saw with receiver this past year it’s going to be very difficult to convince a player in the portal to come in as a back up or depth piece.

Highly doubt anyone in the portal is beating out Davis, Brame or JVD next year.

Would much rather have a kid from high school we like and can develop.

Kitselman came in without any promises. I think you'll find a lot of these type of guys buried on depth charts who are willing to compete somewhere else.

We've taken a portal TE about every year. I wouldn't expect that to change much honestly.

Ethan Davis was the only TE on the roster when we brought in Kitselman.

We didn't take a TE this past transfer cycle cause we have the bodies in that room to where you don't need to rely on the portal anymore.

Now if Ethan Davis blows up this year and goes pro that's a different story for possibly pursuing a portal TE.

You're sort of missing the point.

It would be nice to have a TE commit this cycle, but it's legitimately not a necessity. Portal TEs are available every year. Not everyone in the portal is expecting to be the starter wherever they go.

I completely understand your point and agree a tight end is not 100% necessary this class.

My point though is I'd much rather have this kid who has some impressive offers (Florida, Miami, Oregon, Penn State and others) as opposed to a portal TE in a year or two.

Kentucky needed a tight end and Watkins needed the right college home, but there’s more to it than that. What did the coaching staff like about him as a player, that convinced them to pursue Watkins?

“I would say my biggest thing is my athletic ability for my size,” Watkins said. “Most tight ends as big as I am don’t really do the things I do, like the receiving standpoint. I’m a 4.5 (second) 40 guy. For coaches, they see that and that’s very impressive to them, being 6’5, 240 at my age. But I would say a huge thing is my versatility. I played every single position on the football field other than offensive line last season. For coaches, that really stands out to them. They see how versatile I am as a player and that I’m not just held to tight end but can do everything else. I wouldn’t want to say aggression, but that’s probably the best word for it; the aggression I play the game with. I’m a very physical player and I don’t shy away from anything. From a coaching standpoint that shows I’m ready to play."

Everything fell into place at Kentucky for TE Lincoln Watkins

I don't know guys.... how confident are you that we can flip this kid from a motivated Mark Stoops?

I mean, they say he's really motivated.
Heard hes been putting a lot of time in at the putting green. He wants to be an A golfer in the Fired Coaches Association golf league.

watch both sneed and this kid's film and feel very good about where we end up at TE

very different players imo. this guy is more Brame/Davis type

exciting

Seems coaches are so happy with JVD they don’t need another of his type TE and can get this kid and call it a day for TE this cycle. That’s a win

Sneed was more of a receiving tight end also. He has experience playing OT but that's because he plays among the tiny private schools in TN.
But didn’t Watkins go for 39 for 668 while Carson had 33 for 409? As you said Carson played some OT because again he’s at a small private school. But Watkins had quite a few rushes also and some of what I watched he was a pretty good inline blocker also. I’m surprised this kid is as low rated as he is. Donelson Christian has like 245 kids in their high school(would be 17th smallest school in D1). Port Huron Northern has about 1,100 kids and plays in 2nd biggest class in Michigan.
