TCU Josh Hoover to the Portal. Dang!

George MacIntyre couldn’t beat Merklinger out for the #2 spot all year. We need a bridge to the Faizon Brandon era. Best case scenario is another year of Aguilar, next is the very best available 1 year guy in the portal.

Casey didn’t beat out Suggs. Should he have hauled ass back to Cali? Or do true freshman sometimes not win starting jobs sometimes?

I’m definitely not saying to cut bait on GM.

I guess we’ll see how hard they go for an experienced portal QB if Aguilar doesn’t get that extra year.

Best case scenario, IMO: Aguilar gets another year, and GM and Brandon compete for the spot the following year. I just think you avoid a situation where it’s just down to GM and Brandon next year if possible.

Which part?
George couldn’t beat our Merk. If Gmac had come in 230lbs, he may have started. He was more accurate than every QB in fall camp. He was too skinny which kept him from playing. And Merk got more mop up because we didn’t want him to check out before the season ended.

I don't think there was any shot Heupel was turning to a true freshman.... Hell he was so stubborn with Nico in the 2023 season after the season effectively ended after we lost to Bama on getting Nico significant playing time.

Gotcha. And I’m not trying to dog GM.

My point is I’d just rather not go into next season having to count on either GM or Brandon to be the guy.

thats what bothers me - Brandon might be capable of playing as a true freshman - like Underwood at UM

Because they have consistently been right. What exactly have you been right about that you couldn't read online somewhere. I damn sure know I don't know $hit. And I trust maybe 2 people on VN, the rest have no clue like both of us. Maybe I should say this in a different way. He won't have his decision of eligibility before the portal opens and closes. TN can't sit around and count on him being eligible. Like they've said, they expect Aguilar to jump in the portal regardless. I didn't say he wasn't welcomed back, he's not expected to have a decision and TN won't wait. I honestly doubt he gets another year anyway, so it's a moot point. I have no idea what he does if the decision comes after the portal closes. We will have already added a QB and there wouldn't be room for a 4th. I don't know if he could be added to someone's roster in the spring, even without a 2nd portal. My guess is the Music City Bowl will be his last college football game.

Lastly, if the 1 in a million happens and he returns, then great! He's limited as far as what he can do, but obviously he can still win some games and would probably play even better in year 2 of this system. I just wouldn't count on it.

So, if you were Heupel you would take a chance and hope Aguilar becomes eligible and not go after a portal QB? Then, if he doesn't then what? Ride with 2 QB's with zero experience against our schedule next season? Speaking of questioning intelligence! 🤔🤔🤔
Absolutely spot on

Heard.

Casey did beat out Suggs. Were it not for a shoulder injury, he likely would have started Game 1 as a freshman. Instead, it was Joey Matthews, who wasn't good and got replaced by Suggs until Clausen was healthy. Worst case, Casey would have been the replacement for Joey after Joey failed, but likely would have just started over Joey to begin with. Either way, he wasn't going to be behind Suggs had he been healthy.

Yes, we need to stop discussing the 2026 QB situation as if Joey could be a part of it. He will not be.

I’m trying to push a narrative here. No need to bring pesky facts into it.

He was better than Merk all year. He physically wasn’t ready to play.

He's good with the portal ones. Kinda odd we can't develop one from a freshman. How is nobody ready? George was very highly rated, why isn't he developing? It's a bit concerning.
concerning enough when you look at Ty Simpson's development and the fact that GMac played in a higher classification in state of Tn. A lot of talk on here about GMac not putting on weight already. Portal help would benefit UT with or without JA and I'm thinking of the calibre of Trinidad Chambliss at Ole Miss. Anything can happen with this portal and NIL scenario as it stands now. I'm meanwhile seeing Faizion Brandon as UT's future and doubt that another Nico like situation will occur.

Simpson is 23 years old

GMac is 19

Of course Ty is more developed at his age than a true freshman GMac

Underwood wasn't really ready either. if they had an experienced guy back there they probably make the CFP. Underwood just didn't have the experience yet to handle the bigger games. Also, he isn't that accurate.
