I have gathered a lot of information about the Tampa 2. Brooks of the Bucs appeared to be the fastest LB. In this defense the MLB needs to be the fastest LB, unlike other defenses where the OLBs are faster, correct?

Brooks is an OLB
Ruud was their MLB

OLB still needs to be faster, but MLB still needs to have decent speed.

That's why Gerald Williams will probably not move back to MLB like he wants to next yr.

Jerod Askew couldnt be a better fit for the system. Undersized and faster than your normal LB. Combine him with maybe a King (Melrose) and (possibly) Justin Maclin (2010) next year and our defense could be the best in the country. Not to mention if we get Jaquez Smith (2010) who could be the top recruit in the class.

20% of the time he uses it 100% of the time.

But for real, the defense is based on speed and gap dicipline. The MLB has to be just as fast as the others idealy. Often they drop back into coverage and have deep-middle in a 3 deep zone coverage. I am a huge colts fan and I see this defense every week during the pro season.

VolGrad, just noticed the line under your screen name. We had the Orange Crush in the 80's. Miami DID NOT like it. LOL.

Does anyone want to take this a step further? I still say the MLB needs to be as fast or faster than the OLBs in the Tampa 2 scheme, unlike other schemes. Wasn't Brooks (MLB) the fastest LB in Monte's defense at the Bucs?

And Brooks is the OLB, so I don't know what your talking about.

Barrett Ruud is the MLB.

Ruud, Urlacher, ...etc aren't all that fast.

Urlacher doesn't play in a Tampa 2.

And like I said before, a MLB in the Tampa 2 needs to be fast because they often have deep-middle coverage in a 3 deep zone.

I thought Chicago ran a Tampa 2? I'm not sure, I never really watch them much.

After Dungy became head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and Lovie Smith (linebackers coach in Tampa from 1996-2000) became head coach to the Chicago Bears, they installed the Tampa 2 in their respective teams. During the 2005 NFL season, the Buccaneers, still under defensive coordinator Kiffin, ranked first in the league in fewest total yards allowed, Smith's Bears ranked number two, and Dungy's Colts ranked eleventh. By 2006, the Buffalo Bills, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, and Detroit Lions had also adopted the defense. In college football, Gene Chizik is among the coaches that successfully implemented the Tampa 2.

So Chicago does run the Tampa 2, and Urlacher is known as one of the best MLB's in the league, so I'd say he's doing fine in it.

season ticket holder with my family for the bucs and got to see the tampa 2 in action especially in the 2002 season and it was amazing. this years defense was good, even though they had the 4 game slide at the end of the season, i accredit that to kiffin saying he is leaving and they went downhill, however i have faith that he will get it workin in TN, heck he even has Berry to work with. The key... fast DL with athletic linebackers and swarm tackling. GO VOLS
