Talking Watches with Volnation

Thinking about making this my next purchase. It reminds me a lot of an American 1921 by Vacheron Constantin, except it’s within my current budget unlike a VC

I want a black chronograph, thinking moonwatch or tag carerra, I want a green dial, a bronze case, a watch with gold..2 tone is fine, open casebacks. I prefer pilot and divers. I could just buy a bunch or Seikos and call it a day.
Divers are tough to get with open casebacks, as that lowers water resistance.

Have you looked at the 2 register Hamilton Intramatic manual? I really like the green dial version, but it is automatic, not manual. The black dial comes in manual. Not open caseback though.

I am partial to those two register chronos. It may just be a 40, though, if that is a deal breaker.

The Tudor BB 58 gold case, green dial, nato strap is a killer watch. Looks so much better on the wrist than in pics. And, is novel enough that you only attract “watch guys” and not every glamour boy out there. Had a chance at one of those two years ago at a good price and passed on it too. I am an idiot.

(The Grand Seiko Sakura Wakaba is a gorgeous titanium case watch, but at 38mm fits me better than you.)

Brass? Again, I like the Tudor Black Bay. It comes with the Tudor in-house movement that draws good reviews, and it comes in at 43mm. So, I’ve written it off, but it may be just right for you.

The one other I think you should look at, a bit small, but it looks like a thick watch, so it may wear well, is the Longines Spirit Flyback. Nice pilot watch, chrono, black dial, see through case back.

Happy hunting!

Monaco is for sure on my short list right now. Just bought a Jazzmaster open heart (should be in next week). Will try to find a used Monaco for around 5-6k next. Red/white/blue dial with the black alligator strap.
You give up on that ‘27 Longines?

Moved late. Wanted it. Should’ve pulled the trigger. Hesitated because of an AI search given the reference number suggested they may have placed the movement in a different case. Ended up buying a Jazz master instead.

Desperately wanting some cool vintage watches, just worried about getting screwed. I’m excited about this though because it’s my first non-Seiko

Gotta be careful with vintage. Wise to be cautious. That cushion case sure is nice, though. I wondered about the numbers matching as well, but forgot to search it out further when I got home, so I am glad you did your homework.

I’ve a few vintage I may post pics of at some time. Little bit for all tastes.

Not exactly meeting all your specs, but two other beautiful lines come from Glashutte Original. Some variations available, so you might like to peruse the line, but these are really well crafted in the “mid-luxury” market you have described.

And again, just for your enjoyment. Most folks won’t know what you’ve got on the wrist, but you will. The Germans make some excellent watches.

I like the GO suggestion a lot. They make great watches and have some particularly superb dial work. I don't enjoy everything they make given the price point/influences; not that you're getting a Submariner at retail but the SeaQ is always going to be a tough value proposition in a crowded diver market, and the watches in the Pano collection very obviously borrow heavily from big brother right up the road, but I the Vintage lineup is absolutely awesome and worthy of consideration by anyone looking for something both nice and unique (especially since you can get them under MSRP).

Yes. I could find a mint SeaQ with a green dial for under $7k. Still a LOT of money, but, ole boy is looking at nice stuff, he’s gonna pay nice stuff prices.

I really like the vintage GO line as well. The 70’s stuff captures the vibe so very well.

Our guy doesn’t have anything else to do but look for toys, there is a government shutdown going on.😉

Ive stared at that watch once or twice, but the green version. And the TV dial ones too.

I think that this is pretty cool. I don't agree with the choice to make your Olympic Games commemorative Speedmaster with a 38mm case, I know a lot of enthusiasts prefer the smaller size but I would assume your 42mm stalwart would sell better, though the dial is great and I really appreciate the special detail on 26 for the date wheel.

That green is stunning 😍

The watch I’m bidding on right now. Just got outbid but I’m thinking about going higher. It reminds me a lot of the 1921 by VC.

Check this out - I found this item up for auction on Invaluable and thought you might be interested. You can bid on it here:

That's going to end for $10k+ USD, which is great if you love vintage VC but my honest assessment is it'll be a disappointment if you're looking at it as a substitute for the 1921. It'll wear smaller than the 36.5mm rendition of the 1921, and without knowing which size you'd prefer I'm assuming based on the nice Breitling snag you'd prefer the 40mm 1921 if you had your druthers.

Since it doesn't come cheap, I'd just focus on getting what you actually want (albeit at roughly double the price) with a much easier resale opportunity to boot. Again, just me; if you love this, by all means make it your own.

Yeah, I gave up around 6.5k CAD. I probably just need to save a bit and get the dream watch.

Edit: have you ever owned a vintage VC?

Full disclosure, I am not a vintage watch guy. Other than something really special, I'd be hard pressed to buy something older than ~2000 and the watches that intrigue me earlier than that are exorbitant. As an example, I'd love a birthyear watch but I'd be buying either A) garbage B) a Rolex or C) something extremely expensive when the same price for a contemporary watch would get me a true heavy hitter.

I don't hate the idea of vintage, and we all know there are tons of vintage examples that are worth a bunch, but outside of Cartier and Rolex I believe vintage watches to be somewhat of a dangerous game. Some will go for a good price at auction, but if you want to part from it good luck getting your money back.

I’d be open to a Santos. But the tank is just wildly small too me.

My father gave me this over the weekend. It was his uncle's watch. His uncle was an awesome guy...very generous and an optimistic guy that had a way of lifting spirits just by being around. Needless to say, I'm proud of it. Gold and diamonds are not my thing, but I'm going to wear this one a lot. It's so much more than just a watch to me.
