Talk to Luke Fickell!

This is after how many years????

He went 12-1 and played in the National Title game in his 3rd year at Notre Dame. He's been a great coach every where he's been and has followed the year 3 pattern most great coaches adhere to in their careers. He took Central Michigan from 3-9 the year before he arrived to 9-4 in year 3. Cincinnati was 7-5 before he took over, he was 12-0 in year 3. Notre Dame was 6-6 the year before he go there, 12-1 with their only loss to Alabama in the NC game in year three.

You can look at guys like him, Urban, Saban, etc and see that by their 3rd full year in the program they've gotten things turned around at all their stops.

Fickell may prove out to be a great coach and has big time experience from his one year at Ohio State, the only thing that gives me pause about him at all is that he's a defensive guy and came through that side mainly. That's just not winning football in major P5 conferences now. When you look at his teams, they score 40+ on bad teams but tend to hang out in the mid 20s vs the better teams they play.

We are seeing now that defense first head coaches either adapt like Saban or they get blown out by good offensive coaches like Kirby Smart has been getting smoked this year when Georgia plays teams with a good offense. Unfortunately two of the best offensive potential coaches that are looking at major head coaching jobs again are Sarkisian and Freeze, both of whom have major personal red flags, which make them high risk/high reward. At this point most of our fanbase would probably be good with that, going conservative the last three hires has been a disaster.

Ohio State guy, Urban Meyer Protege. He’s got Cincinnati in the top 10.
Luke Fickell my number 1.
Hugh Freeze is 1a.

I'm still on the JP bandwagon but several of the tires are flat now. We can't just play 1/2 of Football otherwise we are 5-1 right now.

Why in the world would Luke come to Tennessee unless he was paid ridiculously more money than he is now, which I believe is around 4 mil and has a contract through 2026. What is Tennessee gonna offer him? 5 mil a year and a contract through 2028 that is rock solid? 6 mil? I mean I like the idea but realistically what would it take?

It would mean UT would be paying head coaches 10 mil a year until 2025 with Pruitts salary in the mix. Just doesn't look feasable unless someone coughs up some dough.

Not only that but as soon as the Ohio State Job comes open he'll bolt for it. I really think Luck is a top-tier coach.

To add to it I read in another thread there is a 1.5 to 2 mil budget shortfall in the AD. No mo money = no new coaches.

The last Cincinnati guy worked out real well for us
The last Cincinnati guy didn’t coach under Urban Meyer and at OSU prior to taking that job. Butch coached at Central Michigan or so group of 5 school. Butch never had Cincinnati in the top 10 nor did he develop a QB that may go in the first round like Fickle has this year.

I wish someone would. Maybe he could give us some tips on how to slow down the slant pass!

How would everyone feel about Harbaugh, if he were to leave Michigan, which seems inevitable?

Or, James Franklin? Word was, he was happy at Penn State and not willing to leave. But that tune may have changed given the awful start they have had this year?

Harbuagh and Franklin are a couple of interesting names in my opinion.
No more losers here please. Both will be getting run out of their programs and do not need to come here.

@Atlanta VOL just said zero chance Pruitt is fired this year. Will just be changes on coaching staff. (Yeah because that's going to magically fix **** 🙄)

This confirms to me the people around this program simply does not care about the fans. They don't. I urge everyone to forfeit this program until they get their heads out of their asses. We have an awesome basket ball program, I promise you won't miss this garbage at all.
He’s made serious changes after each of the past two seasons. He’s had his chance and keeps blowing it. No more assistant hires to tack on unnecessary buyout money.

Let's think about this, if Fickell turned down Michigan State do you really believe he would come to UT and have to rebuild and establish a new culture? Don't think so...

He's not getting fired during a year that's been sabotaged by COVID. Even best case scenario, we were looking at 7 wins in an all SEC schedule. This team doesn't have the depth to lose players and practice time to quarantine. Yes, I know other teams are dealing with this as well. But we don't know the extent to which each team has been affected.

Not gonna excuse the play lately, as it's been crap since the second half of the UGA game. But Pruitt isn't getting fired short of breaking a clause in his contract. I said from day one that you shouldn't take much away from this year good or bad, because it is not a normal year. Just be glad we have football to watch.

If there is a so-called silver lining, it's that some of our guys haven't played well enough to get drafted but are good players nonetheless and will come back next season (Thompson, Mays, and seniors like Chandler, Middleton, Shamburger, D. Johnson, Butler, Bumpus, etc). They could all come back whereas pre-COVID, we didn't have a chance of them staying either because they were Seniors or because they were considered draft locks.

Even Palmer and Trey Smith could come back next year. Doubtful for Trey. 50-50 for Palmer.

Other teams will have much higher attrition and lose more starters. Of course bama will just reload.

Plus we'll get JT Daniels from the transfer portal! (no relation to Jack)

This is why I dont think anyone is making knee jerk reactions as far as firing coaches. It seems many teams that should be performing at a much higher level from last year are hurt from this year’s protocols and the missed practices among other things. LSU and Penn State are prime examples of that, maybe Oklahoma as well.

While I do think Pruitt is showing trouble beyond this year being an anomaly, it’s a possibility the lack of practices and scrimmages have really hurt the team. His stubbornness, specifically QB, is making it way worse than it should be though. If he’s able to learn from this and improve as a HC, great. If not, we’re screwed next year as well.

Be careful what you wish for. Yes, Fickel has done well at Cincy but it is against AAC competition. I would remind everyone that several Power 5 schools (Florida St, Va Tech, Nebraska, Texas) jumped on coaches who were very successful in that conference and not one is doing anything in the a big leagues. I like Fickel but I’d like to see more of a track record than the AAC.
