Talent Gap Dooley Inherited......

I'm not saying Bicknell was a success. I'm saying Dooley wasn't either.

I have no problem with a 1st time HC having a rough first season. I had no problem with Dooley's first year here.

As to the bolded, that makes no sense. This is Dooley's third year. If he wins 10 and then has a losing season, that's year 4.

I meant he shouldn't get a pass to have a losing season. No coach should get a pass to have a losing season when he has his players in his system

You are lying out of your mind if you would be fine hiring a head coach from San Diego. Come on now. Volnation would have been terrible that day.

he was not just a coach at San Diego - he was Jim Harbaugh - a guy that had played QB in the league for 14 years and made a pro bowl so he had legit qualifications - wasnt like he came out of nowhere and then coached at San Diego - every football fan in America knew his name

He's also known as one of the most competitive people in coaching and a guy that knew he wanted to be a coach his entire life

So because you are a pro bowl player means you are going to be a good coach? Mike Singletary is in the NFL Hall of Fame and look how he turned out at the 49ers. Chuck Smith was an all pro player and he was an awful coach here. Just because you played in the NFL doesn't automatically make you a good coach.

I didn't say just being a pro bowl player makes you a good coach - but that combined with having some winning seasons at San Diego would absolutely make him someone I would take a chance on and I would have been very happy with that hire

the poster was trying to say that people here would have not been happy with that hire after his San Diego stint - I, for one, would have been thrilled

The same can be said about Mike Singletary, that didn't make Singletary a coach.

Okay? Harbaugh had two fantastic seasons at SDSU to back up his pedigree. Singletary was coaching lbs at where, Baltimore I think. That's a huge difference

He didn't coach at San Diego State, he coached at San Diego University, a FCS school. Jim Harbaugh had 3 years head coaching experience, and 0 FBS coaching experience when he went to Stanford. It was a huge risk for Stanford that worked out great.

he did also have 7 years of being an asst with his dad at wku and was also a nfl asst for a year prior to san diego -did really well and then got the stanford job

dont think this was a high risk for stanford football - dont think it was a risk at all for stanford

i get the argument that it would have been a risk for a school like UT to hire him - i still wouldnt have minded it - but certainly this was not a risk for stanford - they had 5 straight losing seasons before he came in so how much worse could he possibly have been?

He was a volunteer coach at Western Kentucky, who was a FCS school at the time, and he coached the quarterbacks for the raiders for one year. Harbaugh had 0 experience in FBS football, and he is given a head coaching job at Stanford. It doesn't matter how bad they were before, another bad hire would set them back even more like Washington State. It was a huge risk.

Auto correct got me.

He wasn't a huge reach for a down program like Stanford was

I'm sorry you don't believe me. I was on the Harbaugh wagon when he was coaching at San Diego.

The difference between Harbaugh and Dooley is Harbaugh won a lot of ball games before getting a BCS job. He was respected by his peers and he upset teams. He didn't make excuses, he just won. He was successful before he got a shot. Dooley wasn't, and still isn't.

I know 2 guys that played for Hoke at Ball State. I was a fan of his before before the 12-1 season.

Lol I also know two guys.... :lolabove:

Was watching the Sports Source show today, they had a few great segments (I usually can't stand that show) about the NFL Draft & how it correlates to the talent drop off at Tennessee. Here are some eye opening #'s & it really shows you the talent gap/differential that Coach Dooley inherited.

1984-1988:

Head Coach: Johnny Majors
Total Vols Drafted: 28
Vols Drafted In The Top 7 Rounds: 17
All-Americans: 5
All-SEC: 29
Overall Record: 38-18-4
SEC Championships: 1 ('85)

1989-1993:

Head Coach: Johnny Majors/Phillip Fulmer
Total Vols Drafted: 28
Vols Drafted In The Top 7 Rounds: 20
All-Americans: 6
All-SEC: 24
Overall Record: 48-11
SEC Championships: 2 ('89, '90)

1994-1998:

Head Coach: Phillip Fulmer
Total Vols drafted: 33
Vols Drafted In The Top 7 Rounds: 30
All-Americans: 3
All-SEC: 24
Overall Record: 53-15
SEC Championships: 2 ('97, '98)
National Championship: 1 ('98)

1999-2003:

Head Coach: Phillip Fulmer
Total Vols Drafted: 38
Vols Drafted In The Top 7 Rounds: 38
All-Americans: 7
All-SEC: 46
Overall Record: 46-17

2004-2008:

Head Coach: Phillip Fulmer
Total Vols Drafted: 21
(NFL Draft Dropped To Only 7 Rounds)
All-Americans: 7
All-SEC: 15
Overall Record: 39-24

2009-2011:

Head Coach: Lane Kiffin/Derek Dooley
Total Vols Drafted: 10
(NFL Dropped To Only 7 Rounds)
All-Americans: 1
All-SEC: 9
Overall Record: 18-20

* The only Vol drafted in the 2012 draft was Malik Jakson, a transfer from USC that Dooley brought in.

* The only teams w/ less draft picks in the SEC over the past 5 years are Ole Miss, Vandy, Arkansas, & Kentucky.

Now I know I've said a lot of dumb crap on here & my twitter out of frustration of losing, but if these #'s don't show you the signifant drop off of talent & the type of below SEC players Dooley has been dealing w/ over the past few years then you're blind.

Plain & simple, the talent that Fulmer & Kiffin left Dooley to work w/ was flat out TERRIBLE. IMO Dooley has done a very good job of restocking the roster over the past few season. We are NOT where we need to be in terms of talent level but IMO the gap is closing. The only teams I think that are flat out more talented than us in the SEC are Alabama & LSU. I could make a case that we are even w/ UGA, USCjr, & Florida but I don't want to get into a drawn out argument.

From MY projected starters going into the 2012 season, this is the # breakdown of how many players I think could get drafted w/in the next few seasons that are currently on the roster:

Offense: 9
Defense: 5

Very good post with alot of common sense and reason! Nice to see after living through the last three years.:good!:
