What color does your town or city bleed?

Several weeks ago, a conversation came up about how strongly pro-Volunteers Nashville is.

So that got me onto an idea: one weekend, driving into the city from Lebanon and back, I'd count cars with team regalia. Get a little 'scientific method' going. So here are the rules I set up for myself:

* Safety first: no checking out cars unless I could safely drive at the same time. Don't have to count every single car I see, just those I can do while driving safely.
* Only cars with Tennessee tags count. A big part of my route is interstate. I don't care who folks from Arkansas or North Carolina are rooting for. TN plates is no guarantee they're local, but it's the best easy way of weeding out visitors.
* I decided to go ahead and count Titans markings...wanted to see how the whole college town / pro town thing played out.

Following those rules, here's the route I took (round trip, so counted both ways): from my home between Lebanon and Gallatin, down 109; then west on I-40 into town; Broadway exit and west to Vandy campus, where I picked up my girls. Then turn around and back to the house. Total about a 60-mile round trip.

And here are the results:

The most surprising thing, for me, was how few cars show any team allegiance at all. I really would've guessed it to be higher than about 1 in 10.

I was also surprised by the Titans result -- only 1 Titans sticker the whole trip. I'd have thought at least a few more.

Aside from that, it was just as I suspected: Nashville is a HUGELY Tennessee Volunteers town, even in the area around Vanderbilt (I saw the lone Vandy car there, but 3 of the Vols cars). I did NOT run into the Bama infestation that the folks around Franklin/Cool Springs reported. I don't know what kind of disease y'all got down that way, but keep it there, don't let it spread! :)

Bottom line: Color Nashville Orange!

So how about your town? Want to take the challenge, get your town on the list? Pick out a day when you're going to be driving through a significant segment of your community, for a significant period of time, and just start counting. Remember, Safety First! Don't count if it's distracting you from safe driving.

Post your results here, and we'll start to build a map of the state in Tennessee orange (or, heaven forbid, some other color).

Go Vols!

p.s. Tennessee towns and cities only, please, we really don't care what the favorite team is somewhere in Ohio or Oklahoma.

You have no idea how miserable it is living in Memphis. There are plenty of vol fans here for sure, but I constantly see Ole P#ss, Memphis, Bammer, Arky, MS State, FL, and the occassional LSU car.

Gallatin seems to be a strong area for Vol regalia with a lot of Bammers thrown in. In Hendersonville most people are from out of the area and most from out of state. I see lots of regalia from all over. The Ohio State, Bama, Penn State, Syracuse, Vandy, Ole Miss, UGA, Gators, Oklahoma, Indiana, Notre Dame and many more. I have noticed a lot more cars with Vols stickers and plates since the program has improved though. Go Vols
