My grandson will be 9 on his birthday. He is wanting a tablet.

I need some advise on what would be good for him.

Any help will be appreciated. I would prefer to stay $250 or less.

Nook HD is cheap nowdays.

Refurb'ed ipad minis are $279.99 now, I think.

There's a few $199 tablets that run android and are good. ASUS has one or two and they also make the Nexus 7, which is still a good tablet.

I believe Best Buy has the Samsung Tab 2 on sale this weekend for $200 and they throw in a case. Not top of the line, but a good price on good hardware.

Probably most important is that he's 9. He probably wants want all his friends have/want. You could throw down a cheaper, better tablet in front of him but if all his friends have a different type it's probably going to be nice, but not great.

Kindle Fire HD...7in tablets are on sale right now for $169.99 on amazon. Those are better than Nooks and have a better selection of games/apps.

i got myself a Nexus 7 32GB for Christmas last year and i love the thing. it has plenty of power and speed and i have a 10 year old and there was basically no learning curve for her it was so simple. from what i've heard and read though especially in the 7" tablets kindle fire, nook, nexus, etc are all very similar and i'm sure he'd be happy with any of them. as far as what was said above along the lines of wanting what friends have, the kindle fire is a more recognizable name

These are $179.99 at Best Buy, and you can put micro sd card in it for extra storage. Im really happy with mine.

I was thinking it would be silly to get this and an S4, until I thought about how I currently have an iPhone and want an iPad.

I have a Nexus 7 and it's perfect. I also think the 7" ones would be a great size for a younger kid

edit: also looks like the prices are dropping because of a new model and the 32gb version is $199

Thanks for all the responses. I think I will go with the Nexus 7.

Staples has the 32gb for $199 and the 16gb for $179.

I think any of the tablets you guys listed would be good.

Now if I can keep him from breaking it.....

I read in some Android magazine the other day that the Nexus 7 blows the one i posted out of the water in every way. That sounds like a really good deal.

Really? There are a ton of educational and entertainment apps out for children. They can actually be very useful tools (if used properly).

Yeah but most times it's the parents or older siblings letting them play the apps on their tablets. I think it's crazy how kids are learning technology now at such a young age.

Damn I was happy with my Hot Wheels at 9. Sure you couldn't interest them in a personal robot that could grant their every wish?

i would suggest some sort of case for it. i have Amazon.com: Blurex Ultra-Slim Case for Google Nexus 7 inch Tablet -- With built in Multi-Angle Stand + Premium Screen Protector Film (Clear),black: Computers & Accessories on mine and while it's not for heavy duty damage, it covers the small possible damage.

You could also always go for the otterbox for it Amazon.com: OtterBox Defender Series Hybrid Case with Screen Protector and Stand for the Nexus 7 - Black: Computers & Accessories

A 9 year old wants a tablet? haha first time I've heard that

i gave my then 9 year old daughter the choice between and iPod or Nexus for the past Christmas and she chose the iPod but i think she's starting to wish she had gotten the tablet after playing with mine and what she uses it for, mainly NOT music.
