T Sowell's perspective on Obama

I'm saying that Sowell probably would've said the same things about Kennedy when he was running for POTUS that he's saying about Obama now. It's putting Sowell's commentary in another light.

OK, I was right, you meant from a political standpoint.

I would beg to differ, Kennedy didn't see himself as a messiah.

Kennedy wasn't a socialist. Back when the democrats actually appreciated the individual over the collective things like tax cuts and national defense were part of their platform.

But I think the basis of his comparison was political, am I wrong?

The basis of comparison was the two of them as candidates for POTUS. It was about Sowell's assessment of whether they were the right candidates for the job.

One distinct difference is that Sowell (and all of us) have seen the impact of those policies. Hindsight reveals the failure of well-intentioned social and economic policies. In the case of Kennedy, it would be speculation about the effect. Now, there is data to suggest the effect of these policies.

This is a key point of his argument (and the title of the piece) that Obama is not a new style politician.

This T Sowell guy is obviously race bating. See you guys Howard Dean was right. Race has no place in this election, unless you are tossing out a "white devil" or two, then they are absolutely acceptable and probably deserving!:p

Okay - I buy that. And I have no problem with your perspective.

And I also wonder how things might have been different had JFK (and later his bro) had not been assassinated. Had we not gone into Vietnam... (I'm not making any declarations, I just wonder if these "failed policies should be looked at in a vaccuum or in the context of everything else going on at the time).

Hard to say but I don't see Vietnam as being directly tied to the effects of social welfare programs on crime, ghettos, etc.

I'm a firm believer that in an attempt to have the government take care of everyone, personal responsibility and drive is taken away. I think the evidence is pretty clear. Obviously there has to be some safety net.

JFK, also had a strong military background and wanted quotas on immigrants. In the political furor of this day, he would be a moderate.

Glad this generated a little discussion
was busy at work and couldn't join in, but I think it's a pretty good piece, and McCain will start to expose these Obama's faults.

I think thats what he should do, but he acts like he just wants to play nice. While BHO is out there ripping him, he's being all gracious. He better find a voice or direction, or he is for a long up hill battle, imo.

sweet.

but wait - since I'm also a liberal supporting Obama, I must also be an elitist.

how can I be both?

that is why it is the masses....he inspires the mindless hoi polloi (uhh...sounds good to me) and the mindful elitists (who rise above their sense of "clinging" to religion to vote for policies that favor their interests).
