T Awaka production

Against Arizona 7 minutes played, 2 boards and 4 points giving up 4” and 60 pounds. Solid freshman contribution IMO
The reason Aidoo and Awaka, etc didn’t produce more and picked up fast fouls was because of the quick whistles, which were called in favor of Ballo. I saw two plays where Ballo literally shoved our guys 4 feet away from the basket and nothing was called. We were not even allowed to defend in the paint without a whistle. Awaka had two terrific offensive buckets that were impressive.

Unless my eyes played tricks on me(which is possible at my age), Awaka was called for a foul and was literally just standing beside the other guy. I think it was his 3rd foul.
You’re correct. Awaka was surprised. He turned around with his hands in a shrugging motion and looked towards the refs. It was an egregious call.

Awaka is like Rodman, Barkley or even Michael Cage (anybody remember him), just a rebounding beast. I know he doesn't have Rodman's defensive game or Barkley's offensive game, but he just wants the ball more on rebounds. Can't remember a kid like that at UT, ever, maybe Nix as a Junior?

Bernard was a rebounding beast - nobody has been close.

Aidoo/Awaka + Plav/ON = 40 minutes of quality interior play imo
Of those, ON still puzzles me. Rebounding and motor below what he’s capable of, and I still get antsy when he’s in traffic with the ball or when he’s passing into traffic. But, he does put the ball in the basket at times when he’s on a streak. So much there to work with, and if he could play consistently, hit the boards hard, and take care of the ball, he could be a big impact the rest of the year.

I've posted similar stats before but I thought I'd make a quick update after some more sample from Awaka to show just how good he is.

Zach Edey is leading the country in TRB% (min 20 mpg) at 24.8%. He's averaging 26.5 rebounds per 100 possessions.

Awaka has a TRB% of 29% and 31.4 rebounds per 100 possessions.

Awaka is 2nd in win shares per 40min and also has the highest PER on the team.

These numbers will inevitably go down as he plays more (or will they?) but it's insane how much of a force he already is. His rebounding and hustle plays are so valuable we can almost live with him having minimal offensive production right now.

I've made a similar comp to Tshiebwe's numbers, both this year, and as a freshman at WVU. I included the same caveat as you (it's early), but we're now ⅓ of the way thru the year, he's playing more, and maintaining. Maybe he's just on that same level.

Do you guys have any memory of Tshiebwe’s offensive game at West Virginia? He was pretty good out to 15-17’ last season. I’m curious if he demonstrated a jump shot pre- Kentucky. Not really sure what Awaka has on offense other than put backs or the like?

He didn’t have a whole lot previous to his Kentucky days. He worked hard on his shooting and developed the 15-17 footer out front. I’ve read he has worked pretty hard on a 10-15 footer from the baseline, but not watched enough to know how that is going.
