Little did anyone know that the win we escaped with at Syracuse would lead towards a NC and undefeated season. We rocked the Carrier Dome in the first half and then the Vols fell apart in the second half. With a few breaks and a tough call against the Orangemen, we walked out of that stadium with a W. Not a pretty, sexy, proud or gleeful W, but a W just the same.
Easy to point at what we feel went wrong last night but as Butch said after the game "Good teams find ways to win".

We beat a scrappy and determined team last night. Let's focus on what it will take to defeat VaTech. My immediate thoughts go towards improving our call playing on both sides of the ball. We have uncovered some weaknesses and need to make adjustments.

Anyone else have suggestions for our coaching staff?

Go Vols!

Careful with the Syracuse references! I got cussed badly last night in the Official Game thread for saying "Remember Syracuse '98!"

Oooooooo were the responses ugly and barely coherent!

No parallels to that game. That game was on the road, Syracuse was ranked #17, and they had a QB taken 2nd overall in the draft the next year.

Syracuse had McNabb at QB and loads of other very good players. There wasn't any shame at beating them by a slim margin on their home turf.

Syracuse was also ranked 17th at the time and only had 3 losses all year I believe. Having said that, everyone needs to take a deep breath and calm down.

Regardless the entire nation knew that App. State has been a great program for years. In my humble opinion the coaches have to do better. Players as well but this staff seems lost at times. A win is a win next week will tell a lot.

Syracuse was ranked and had multiple nfl players on that team. It's sweet that you think a Sunbelt team is even remotely in their league.

Donovan McNabb hates you for posting this.

The outcomes were somewhat similar with us getting a scare, but the rosters on the opposing teams were much different. Hell who knows, Appy may have 2-3 NFL players on their roster. That game last night was their championship.

I don't get the Syracuse comparison. They were ranked #17 and had a NFL QB. They turned around the next week and beat a top 15 ranked Michigan in Ann Harbor.

I think, we can look at the South Carolina game versus Texas A&M in 2014, TAMU blew Carolina out and then never replicated that again the rest of the year. The first game is never an indicator of a season. It was sloppy, poorly executed game by the o-line and wide receivers, but that doesn't mean that's who they are for the rest of the year.

Guys, have we established that Syracuse was a ranked team when we beat them in 98? If not, let me check my stats? ... Paging Bob Mueller... paging...

Syracuse beat Michigan about 38-0 the following week. Appy State is good but no where near that good. Also, this year's UT is no where near as good as UT's 98 team.

Not true, you can't say it never is, because in 2005 it most definitely was an indicator for us.

You can say it isn't necessarily an indicator. OSU 2014 would be a good example.
