BREAKING: Sydney Sweeney to Play Josephine Baker — Because Hollywood Is Bold Like That

Hollywood sources confirm: Sydney Sweeney, star of Euphoria and master of aesthetic TikTok selfies, is set to play legendary entertainer Josephine Baker in an upcoming biopic. Yes, that Josephine Baker—the 20th-century icon, civil rights activist, and French cabaret sensation. No, we’re not sure how the timeline works either.

Insiders say the film will feature “modern reinterpretations” of Baker’s most famous performances, a lot of slow-motion hair flips, and, of course, a meticulously curated Instagram account for behind-the-scenes shots. Costume designer promises the “historical outfits” will be 80% period-accurate and 20% brand partnerships.

When asked about the casting, one studio exec said, “We just wanted someone with the vibe, you know? Someone who can do jazz hands and go viral.”

Sweeney herself posted a cryptic emoji-laden response: 💃✨🌍 #IconVibes #HistoryWithAFilter

Sources also revealed that historians were “consulted” but ultimately told, “We’ll see what the director wants.”

Filming starts next month, with fans already debating whether the movie will be a biopic… or an extended fashion campaign.

I'm not sure I'll ever watch another celebrity biopic. Has there been a good one since Ray and Walk the Line? I feel like none of these are ever honest and entertaining. It's one or the other. I'm a huge Dylan fan and I love Chalamet, and I still haven't watched that one.

Not sure if you got the point on this. But, a wise man once observed, "Eight hundred leaf-tables and no chairs? You can't sell leaf-tables and no chairs. Chairs, you got a dinette set. No chairs, you got dick!"

I haven't seen one since whatever that fever dream of a film Baz Luhrmann was trying to make about Elvis. That movie was terrible!

I'll admit that I had no idea what's going on in this thread. The joke is that SS would be playing a black woman? Are people really busting a gut to this and saying others lack a sense of humor?

Some people are just not 85 years old and don't know who JB is. We're also not used to fake movie threads, tho I could tell it wasn't real, I just didn't know wtf any of this was happening.

To be more precise, the satirical joke is that Ms. Sweeney would be portraying a historical black figure, which is aimed at the recent casting choices for HBO's Harry Potter series and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey". Yes, Lupita Nyong'o is a beautiful woman and a fantastic actress. But, just like Ms. Sweeney is not Josephine Baker, Ms. Nyong'o is not Helen of Troy. And, yes, some people are busting a gut over this.

Since it is satire, by nature it is fake.

Age has nothing to do with ignorance of who Josephine Baker was. Does one need to be over 110 to know who Scott Joplin was? Some people are just not as well read as others. There's nothing wrong with that, it is just how it is.

The difference is both Helen of Troy and Snape were never real people.

Other than being beautiful Homer never describes Helen or Troy in any physical details. People are familiar with the Hollywood interpretation of the character as a European caucasian with blonde hair and blue eyes. There is nothing historical about that depiction though. If anything she should be… IDK… Greek? 🤷‍♂️

As for Snape I guess he is described in the book, but the original creator is very involved in the casting. If she wants to change it up for a show then that is her prerogative. I’m not an HP scholar but I don’t think there is any story relevance to whether he is black or white.

The whole thing was a joke, for crying out loud. Jeez man. Re-read it. It's pretty funny throughout the whole thing.

On second thought, no. You'd be wasting your time re-reading it.

He's described as very pale.

I'm not one to jump up and down about it, but I do think they should make an effort to make characters look like history or the writers intended.

The funniest white wash casting ever (in my opinion) ....

In a 1956 movie called "The Conqueror," the Mongol Empire ruler, Genghis Khan, was played by John Wayne. 😂

But again JKR was involved with casting. If she was ok with it then why does it matter?

This is a similar discussion to the Netflix show Sandman, the character of Death was a pale goth girl in the comics but they cast a black woman. The original author was involved in the casting so I rolled with it. Turns out the actress killed it!
