Swain wants Butch to emulate Dabo

There are so many similarities between Butch and Dabo. I've been comparing the two for several years. Both have a similar philosophy, personality, style of communication, recruiting prowess, etc.

The main difference between the two: Dabo brought in top-notch coaches when he hired Chad Morris and Brent Venables. Before that point, Dabo had similar struggles as Butch. Venables wasn't hired till Dabo's 5th Season and the end of Clemson's 4th Season was similar in many ways to the end of our season this year. Clemson got blown out in an embarrassing loss in the Orange Bowl with a defense that couldn't stop anything. While we won our bowl game, no doubt we had a similar embarrassing loss against Vanderbilt.

We're so close though and I feel like too many NegaVols here don't realize that. We're just a few top-notch coaches away from being an SEC Championship contender right now. Really hoping we land Mark Helfrich on the offensive side. Changes on defense may be needed, as well, but Shoop has a spectacular track record, so I don't view him as the problem there. Hoping Butch can realize what changes need to be made, because we have the potential to be a perennial power again if he does. No reason we can't look more like Clemson.

That's the million dollar question right there, is Jones willing to make changes to his side of the ball on offense?

Shoop should get a pass due to injuries and track record but they need to be exponentially better next season.

There is no chance of this happening. Butch is not Dabo, he is Houston Nutt. High control who will never let a coordinator look smarter than him. Way too thin skinned.

Good post. However, the best coaches for the job they are hired to do will be hamstrung unless we can recruit quality depth for all positions. This speculation about moving guys from one position to another (Jennings and/or other receivers) should not be necessary unless it is in the best interest of the player. Real depth for all positions is the answer to me.

So is quality coaching, something we haven't seen yet.

It's the same way with Saban. He hires great coordinators and let's everything fall into place. Saban is a recruiter and a master motivator and that's about it.

In some respects you are right. But you are dead wrong about him just letting things fall in place. Case in point, when he gets enough of Kiff's play calling he slams his foot down and says run the ball. If defense or special teams don't do things to suit him, he comes down hard on their coaches. He is a motivator alright. Do it my way or pay the price. (remember his a-- chewing of Kif earlier this year?)

I've always said Butch will only succeed with a superior OC and DC...and letting them do THEIR thing with his input. Obviously the most successful HC's upgrade their staff as time goes on.....time to cut some cords...and spend some cash IMHO.

And Clemson will lose yet again to Bama....they sadly enough are starting and finishing #1..........yet again.
Aaaaaaaagggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

This morning, Swain and Stokes talking about Dabo taking Clemson to next level in recent years.
They say he did this by hiring guys that are smarter than him at OC and DC.
Said that Dabo realized his strengths were more as a recruiter and motivator than as a play caller.
They say that Butch would also be best suited in this role if he's not afraid to hire some strong coordinators and give them free reign.

On a few other subjects,
Swain thinks Blackburn gets AD job in February, thinks Clemson beats Bama, and wants Byrd to primarily play on defense next year with a few reps per game at receiver.
Says Jennings will be primary go to receiver with Malone gone and have to step up off the field as a team leader.

I agree your coordinatorsite need to do bulk of work that why so important to get Elite coordinatorso and assts

Again...

Highest scoring offense in UT history.

Hired what many considered the best DC in the nation.

I know some don't want to face the fact that we had HORRIBLE luck with major injuries and a lot of them. But it is reality.

I don't know. I just don't think any coach can be seen as quality with the quality depth we seem to lack over the last few years. I will say S&C seems to be lacking. I know injuries will happen, but some of ours look like they are caused by lack of strength and condition being less than guys on other teams. ( i.e. Ala., Ohio ST., Wis., Minn. and others)

Butch has had multiple great recruiting classes. We should have the depth by now. Look at the 2014 class, and ask why there are so many busts?

Swain is probably right about Butch, maybe not about Jennings. But I don't really give a rat's a$$ what Swain thinks until he gets rid of Stokes and even then I probably won't care. Has even less credibility than Basillio in my opinion.

To ReaderVol

Vanderbilt: 6-7
South Carolina: 6-7

And that disproves what part of what I posted?

Oh that's right it doesn't. Yes those losses sucked and shouldn't have happened. But all coaches lose games they shouldn't and especially after major injuries etc.

Where were those top rated classes? I forgot, they were losing to SC and Vandy. It's not like we were starting walk ons.

I'm good with Coach Jones being Coach Jones. Talk show folks fall somewhere below politicians in my rack and stack. Arm chair/Monday morning quarterbacks have the advantage of knowing the outcome. The bookies in Vegas are pretty good guessers. They were 15 of first 18 bowl games. Now they are 21 of 38. UT is in a lot better position to win big games (Florida, Georgia) than in years. Bama is racking up in recruiting see yersterdays Under Armour game. Beating up on UT coaches and program is not helping UT. Do I agree with every play or recruit? No. But I don't know a fraction of the facts the folks in the program know. Swain and Stokes make a living off their mouths. Nuff said.

One of the things Dabo does is gets the best kids on the field. Saw where he started a true freshman on his OL against OSU. I do not know this for a fact, but from the outside looking in, CBJ seems to favor seniority over talent. There's a lot of examples of this but from our opening game we had older kids playing poorly, perhaps due to injury, but on the field under performing over younger better kids watching them play. Further how does a talent such as Warrior NOT play more than he did given our DB woes? How does Smith that drops about as many as he catches starts over Byrd or Johnson? CBJ needs to let freshman that can play and start do it, the hurt feelings experiment ala Hurd should be over now. Get those youngsters that can help us win on the field!!

This is done by coaches all across the country in many sports. Coaches want to trust their players and are afraid of the unknown. Let's face it, all young players will make mistakes, and you don't know what you are going to get. Fulmer did it too. Each situation is different, however. It's easy to plug in a freshman among a bunch of veteran players, especially when that position group is playing well. Sometimes when guys are struggling, you try to get the most experience on the field.
