He says having 18 people out now is too much.
Says that this plus all of last years in season injuries raises red flags.
Want us to look if we are stretching long enuf, insisting on icing down etc.

I'd like to hear that Butch has a meeting with team doctors, trainers, managers, strength and conditioning, nutritional people all in one room.
Ask them why they think we are having so many injuries and get their suggestions on any changes we should make.
It can't all just be bad luck, can it?

Saban may have a point after all.
He's been adamant about high tempo lleading to player injury.

This is too much. I think players may be pressing because of all the new talent and such. A lot of competition going on.

They need to take this whole day off.

Then resume practice tomorrow evening and let that be more of a walk through. Saturday they can get back at it full go.

I think all programs need to evaluate the effectiveness of two a days.

Unlike the old days, most of these guys are very big and train year round.

Suddenly, a month before the season you practice twice in a day. It's like cramming before a final.

I'm not saying it would work, but someday someone semi-wacky like Chip Kelly, will try the no tackling practice. The winningest coach in DIII history didn't let his players tackle in practice.

No need to point this out IMO it's football it's part of the game.. If they went soft and didn't tackle or whatever some guys could still twist knees and ankles.. Just a chance when you play this sport....

People who know a whole lot more than Swain are putting these programs together. I've read a few times that Butch is overly cautious with holding players out. Swain is just filling hours

I am all for pushing the players in practice and stressing the uptempo style of play which we do. But there is a clear line between pushing tempo and setting players up for injury. I'm not saying Marcus Jackson or Marquez North's injuries are directly related to this, but looking at all the players who were out in spring mostly due to pre-existing injuries or injuries sustained in the weight room along with all 18+ players being injured in fall camp, there is definitely a correlation. We are supposed to be getting ready for the season. We need everyone healthy. No matter how good we look on paper or how many experts think UT can make a run for the east, if we can't stay healthy we will never live up to the hype.

/end rant

@brentdougherty: Still hearing it's not that bad with regards to TN WR Marquez North's injury.

18 people out with injuries???!!?? Who?

Saulsberry who has been injured every day since Oregon destroyed his knees.

Preston Williams being out for the ACT apparently counts against us.

Butcher is out but due to a non-UT suffered injury. That tempo, yo.

Chance Hall brought with him an Achilles tear. The fact he's even playing is a miracle so I would expect him sitting out is precaution.

Croom is still overcoming an ACL injury from last year.

Wiesman??? Nobody knows. Minor by the looks of it and precautionary sit.

Pig tweaked his hamstring. This is the first maybe "needs more stretching/icing". However, these coaches can't feel what the players feel. It's still up to the players/trainers to communicate and the player to properly and fully stretch.

Ethan Wolf didn't practice. Don't know why.

Evan Berry didn't practice. Don't know why.

Justin Martin tweaked his knee in a full-contact scrimmage. That happens. He's not out long-term and is being held out until he's 100%.

Brian Randolph missed yesterday. Likely being held out as a veteran benefit after a 2-a-day.

Hurd, IMO, is the same. Just resting him after a 2-a-day.

etc etc etc

Remember, a lot of these kids had existing injuries from HS that were brought with them. Can't really put that on the coaching staff. A good bit of this is just the typical "sky is falling" reporting we see from all media outlets. USD dropped $.50 in trading value? Time to sell your house and move to Micronesia.

There's a list out there somewhere.
Probably at knoxnews or another site.
But, all media saying 18 currently out of practice.
Most are just called bumps and bruises and recovery time.
But, some have no specifics. So, we don't know.

look at the picture of Martin getting hurt. That is a sprained knee at the least regardless! North has been injury prone and it isn't uncommon for guys to blow ACLs in non-contact drills. Jackson injury (bicep tear) isn't a result of lack of anything. Happens in NFL all of the time. Didn't Justin Harrell tear his in 2006? Others are just camp bumps. Robertson is out due to acid reflux...does he quit eating? Hell, they've hit for about 4 practices is all at this point. Way too early to start changing the conditioning program AGAIN!

It amazes how big egos get that people will speculate like this and gloss over the exact point you made in that first sentence. It's an insult to everybody's intelligence when ex-jock, radio guy goes here.

And to add to this and repeat what I listed above...

Several guys are out due to injuries they brought to the program from their HS days. Chance Hall, Butcher, etc. Williams is being counted due to his ACT? Saulsberry from his Oregon blowout? Those are 4 guys just off the top of my head.

It's unreal. There is no attempt by our own Knoxville media to at least be somewhat responsible in their reporting.

They know our fanbase is insular and just over-react. Cam Robinson (bama's best OT) sprained his knee just a couple of days ago and was right back out there practicing. Jones has shown he doesn't do that as sprains can easily graduate to full tears.

Yeah, lets instead punish Jones. JFC, I'm beginning to really despise our fanbase and the media that feeds their over-reactions.

If Swain calls Butch up and recommends a regimen of pre- and post-workout stretches, as well as touting the homeopathic benefits of ice on sore muscles, someone PLEASE record the call? I really would like to hear Butch's response. Should be a doozy. :)

I'm sure the team doctors and training staff are well aware of what needs to be done to curb injuries. Some of the guys are being held out over something that would not be a big issue during the season. Jashon Robertson has a stomach virus. Some guys you just don't want a little injury to turn into a bigger problem - i.e. Pig Howard's hamstring. It will be OK people.
