Last week at the game in Charlotte, I sat next to the UT student section. Most were quite inebriated (shock!) however, I kind of felt bad for the students as over the past 4 seasons they unfortunately haven't had as much to cheer for compared to when I was at UT. Well, here are some humble numbers:

Overall SEC
1975 7-5 3-3
1976 6-5 2-4
1977 4-7 1-5
1978 5-5-1 3-3
22-22-1 9-15 (6 SEC games/year)

2014 7-6 3-5
2015 9-4 5-3
2016 9-4 4-4
2017 4-8 0-8
29-22 12-20 (8 SEC games/year)

I never missed a game, but apparently my memory is becoming a bit cloudy...!!! So, let's just hope that this years Freshman class of UT Students can look back 4 years from now and brag like hell on how great their teams were!!

You came in at time Coach Majors was brought in to rebuild. This tenure got to see rebuild and setback under Jones. With different philosophies and desire for different build of players it may take a couple years. So the class that starts 2020 will be the class to look and see how their 4 years plays out.

That 12-20 SEC record makes me sick.
Can't say I faired much better while at UT OP:
2007 10-4 (6-2) SEC East!
2008 5-7 (3-5) Wyoming...
2009 7-6 (4-4) Mattress Burning
2010 6-7 (3-5) Still pissed about that LSU game
2011 5-7 (1-7) Bamboo

33-31 (17-23)
Bleh.

1921 when grandad played (offense and defense) 6-2-1 under first year coach M.B. Banks. Grandad had a back coming at him once who tried the stiff-arm. Bad move, Grandad bit his palm and a fumble ensued. (no facemasks) 😆

It’s interesting to note that majors wasn’t fired until much later. he had already won a natty and was in the prime of life. A lot of folks may wonder what a coach looks like who’s won a natty and still young. Tennessee’s championship was 21 years in The future when they 4 - 7

I was there '75-'79. Waited tables in Gibbs. You are right it was lean back then. You didn't happen to live in Reese as a Freshman by any chance?

Let's just hope we have seen the bottom of the hill. Bumps in the road ahead are expected but, time to climb back up the hill.

Not to nitpick, but the "bottom of the hill" is called a valley. Not the bottom of the hill. :)

Same years here. Was in Carrick. Pert Jenkins - 219lb DE. John Chavis - walk on nose tackle in a tiny frame. You are right, very lean years. (Ptcarter - I remember I owe you a visit next time I go back to Huntsville)

I feel bad for those kids who were freshmen in 2008. They saw Fulmer's last disastrous year, Kiffin's year, and two years of Dooley.

Being a freshman in 2010 was bad too. Dooley's three years and Butch's first year.

SEC won - loss record. Since end of 2007 is 26-54.. Wonder how long it will take for the win column to catch up with the loss column?

My tenure was kind of strange, but I started at UT in 2009, went back to Memphis for 2010, and finished off college at UT from fall 2011-spring 2014. I didn't really even care for football until I attended my first game as a student. Looking at our history during my college career, I wonder how I even became a fan haha!

2009 7-6 (4-4) Mattress burning
2011 5-7 (1-7) Kentucky breaks the streak
2012 5-7 (1-7) From "Bray for Heisman" to "Fire Dooley" in just a few games
2013 5-7 (2-6) Butch year 1. Beat SC... then lost to Vanderbilt in dramatic fashion to cap off my last game as a student

22-27 (8-24) overall... and somehow I still bleed orange. At least some current students got to witness better than a .500 regular season.

Now they have a steady diet of 1-AA schools as well that many of the past teams did not. Neyland played the likes of Maryville College, Citadel, Chattanooga, Washing and Lee etc. The modern day didn't have that many cupcakes but post 2008, they all have a 1-AA team. Throw in the UTEPs of the world and it is just not apples to oranges. The bad games during the Hall of Fame era was Southern Miss (and similar teams) when they where actually good.
