Sunseri vs Wilcox

Let me start by saying I am not a negaVol or a Dooley supporter. I am a Vol and have been since I first caught the bug in 1977 when I was seven years old. I want the Vols to succeed and win each Saturday.

Five games into this season with eight returning starters on defense, and a two new junior college starters. I think it is safe to say that the UT defense has been a complete failure to this point. This has the potential to be the worse defense ever at Tennessee.

I recall how much better the Vols were last year at this point under Wilcox. The Vols weren't dominating on defense last season but they were very respectable. If Wilcox is still at UT would the defense be any better this season? I think so. The scheme last season seemed to be very solid with the Vols giving up a lot less big plays.

This season under Sunseri, the Vols seem to always be out of position, and missing tackles with a few exceptions. Where would the Vols be on defense if Wilcox has stayed at UT?

44 points is enough to win a lot of games in the SEC. No matter who the opponent there is no excuse for the way the Vols have played on defense so far under Sunseri.

If Wilcox had stayed the Vols would have most likely beaten UGA Saturday, and maybe even UF a few weeks ago. Sunseri has been a huge disappointment, and the Vols have taken a few steps in the wrong direction under his leadership on defense.

If Dooley is to survive this season, and return for the next, then Sunseri must improve the defense dramatically or be shown the door.

Just my two cents.

Two totally different coaches and schemes. Just five games in for Sal implementing a new defense for this team. Give it time.

Wilcox left he didn't get fired. So no matter what we were going to be implementing a new defense this year anyway. It usually takes a couple (2-3) years to install a new defense (ask Georgia) and growing pains on a new scheme were/are inevitable. Going forward a 3-4 defense will be better in the long run. Once we get a steady stream of 3-4 LB and good DB recruits we will be solid on D. Sal will get us there, but it will take a year or 2.

There is a reason Wilcox played more bend but dont break "D", if you cant see why after these first few games I dont know what to tell ya.

Sal will figure it out soon enough, I hope.

I remember many people flaming Wilcox defense last year but I guess it wad warranted . We have many coordinators on this forum

Let's not forget Curt has been dealing with turf toe and will the rest of the season. He's not anywhere near full speed or 100%. Give the kid credit for toughing it out cause we are thin at LB.

You can't judge Sal based on 5 games with a totally new defensive scheme. It will take time and personnel.

McCullers, has to be out best defensive player on the field for us.. He beat the secondary to a run on the outside, Shows how slow we are. Not nega at all I still predict us with one more loss to Alabama, IF the D plays what they are capable of. Half the season in,and 2 weeks with the bye to get right. Step it up Sal no excuses

Did you watch last season? Most of the players are back from a defense that finished sixth in the SEC and 30th nationally. These are the same players we have now.

Sunseri is a failure. Now we know why he he has been an assistant for his most of his career.

You can take the number one defense in the country and change the defensive scheme with the same players, and in the first year they won't be anywhere near as good. Going from a 4-3 to 3-4 is about as hard as it gets. You damn coach haters are clueless about the game of football. B!tching, you have down to a tee!

In some ways yes.

Wilcox couldn't put both Ds he coached here together and even get close to what Sal is working with talent wise.

Sal is trying to install a complex system that takes a lot of time. In the meantime we are getting ripped if we don't cause a turnover.

Sal is the hero because he is here. Wilcox sucks because he left.

I don't care if Wilcox left, was fired or had Scotty beam him to Washington, Sal is an upgrade imo.
