First of all as most of you know I don't like Dooley and until he shows something this year I'll continue to be that "nega vol"...

But I love the hire of Sunseri and outside of Shannon this was the best we could have possibily done.

Now my question: What scheme will he run? At Bammer it was the 3-4, but he had the players in place there. Do we have the players to play a 3-4 or will he switch to a 4-3? Will it be a hybrid of both?

I personally would like to see a 3-4 aggresive, blitzing type of defense.

I 100% believe we have the front 7 personnel for a 3-4. But I worry we don't have the backfield who can cover well enough for the inordinate number of blitzes. Typically, a 3-4 has at least one shut down corner and I don't think there is one on the roster.

As for the front 7, I think it aids Jacques Smith and AJ a lot. AJ is the prototypical ILB in a 3-4...extremely strong and a great tackler. Jacques reminds me so much of Terrell Suggs in an OLB position. Could be crazy.

Just saw that - good news.

but will he be ready as a true freshman?

Multiples if I had to guess. Work with some schemes they know and mix in some 3-4 where applicable. CSS has been involved with both.

The reason they have been aggressively seeking so many JUCOs was to hasten the process. They will run a variation of the Saban–style 3-4. Getting McCullers means they now have the Death Star–sized NT to run it effectively. Guys like Sentimore and Couch and O’Brien will fit at the 5-technique DE, and Carson was put on this earth to be a 0/1-tech pig NT.

And the characteristic of the Saban/Smart defense was this:

1st Down: Boring, predictable
2nd Down: Boring predictable
3rd Down: OMGWTFBBQ

I figure that’ll be what we do with a more experienced core of DBs.

The 3-4 is dominating the league right now. Not to mention Saban has been schooling people with the 3-4 scheme for 15 years.

I love it.

CSS will want to run the 3-4 but will have to evaluate the D as a whole. DBs will have to step it up. JMO

Maybe I don't understand the 3-4 very well, but I believe it should help take pressure off the db's instead I making their job tougher. More LB help underneath on long yardage, plus insane blitz packages seriously decrease time spent in coverage.
