College summer leagues are starting soon, and your Forest City Owls kick off the season with an exhibition game on Memorial Day and the regular season starting on Thursday, May 28.

Vol DJ McDowell will be toeing the rubber for the Owls this summer, continuing for I think the 12th year of the Tennessee-Forest City connection. Hopefully another UT guy will make it our way later on. Also, former Vol Stratton Scott is returning for a second summer with us.

Once the college postseason is over, we should have about 14 returning players from last year’s squad that lead us to the championship series.

Forest City, NC is a great place. Friends call it a modern day Mayberry. As in years past, if you want to come to a game, let me know here. If I’m not there, I can leave tickets at will call. If I am there, we’ll have a beer together.

There are some years on it, but here’s a video of our ballpark, McNair Field:

I meant to ask a while back and forgot. Have you all met the guys running the team in Zebulon?

I've kept up with them a little since the concept of fielding a team of all Australians is pretty interesting (given Liam Spence, Bazzana, etc). I have no idea how it will go for them, but there's definitely some talent that comes from over there.

And I'll go ahead and make this my annual pitch to anyone that happens to pass through this thread that college wood bat leagues are fantastic entertainment.

Great, close-up parks in cool towns. The CPL and Appy League are fantastic in our region. The Cape is a tradition for a reason.

Its one of the best ways to get out of the house and enjoy some baseball, ESPECIALLY if you're taking a family. If there's a better, more affordable entertainment value I'd like to see it.

In a way, it reminds me of going to games at (nicer, well kept) Bill Meyer and I mean that as a high compliment.

Yes, they are in our league, so we know them. Everyone wants them to do well. They have a great facility, as they took over the Carolina Mudcats ballpark. They added turf to the field during the off-season to try to cut down on rainouts.

I did not know until lately there’s lots of Australian guys who play for American colleges. It’s great. I hope it grows the game.

And thanks for your plug to go see a summer league team, no matter where they are located. It’s affordable family fun.

That's pretty cool, i didn't connect that they had the Mudcats facility. I'm glad it will still be used.
