College football coaches approve suggestion for rule change for redshirts.
If approved by the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, it will allow freshman to play in 4 or less games. A program could allow freshmen to get some reps in games against a FCS opponent, or in blowout situations. It could also allow a team which has been eliminated from bowl consideration to insert some players late in the year to help their development without repercussion toward eligibility. You could also see a circumstance where a top program would use the rule to manage their roster in a way to keep players fresher for the end of the year. The only downfall to this change, is that it will eliminate medical redshirts.
The recommendations now move to the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, which meets next week.

I also like it. Say it's for health concerns and there's no way they'll be able to turn it down lol.

I like it, however if you have a young player you start gets hurt less than 4 games in you can still use the redshirt. In that aspect it kinda covers all of it.

It would also allow them to play in bowl games, as long as they haven't played in 4 games prior. Just imagine the live action game experience they can gain without burning a redshirt.

As long as the athletes who who qualify now for a medical redshirt are covered, I'm all for it.

I move Alabama is no longer able to have redshirts and players can be there no more than 1 year.

I like the idea on its face value. However, since you mentioned Alabama, I wonder how it would play out for teams full of high 4 and 5 star athletes that might have to be redshirted due to no room for them to play their freshman year. Would it be a case of the rich getting richer as they would now be allowed to use most of their star recruits that would have been redshirted the whole year. A great recruiting tool advantage for the rich possibly. On the other hand, I'm thinking you'll see more players declaring for the draft as redshirt sophomores since they've technically been out of high school 3 full years and have 4 more games of college experience. That could work against the Bammers, Walnuts, Free Shoes, and Tiggers.

I like this rule. Think about the Tennessee Tech game we could have played every freshman we were redshirting this game while protecting some banged up guys. Would have loved to see Jarrett get some snaps. Josh would have played only 1st quarter this game maybe series in second so both other QB could play.

I like it at face value BUT I don't like it getting rid of the Medical Redshirts.

That's totally unfair to the kids that get hurt and can't use that redshirt year.

VFL...GBO!!!

Or against Ohio and saved like 5 of our guys from injury.

Around 4.3 or so

So when someone breaks school career records will the asterisk be in play? I hate for Jalen Hurd to lose his milestone of 2nd all-time rushing to a kid with 4 extra games. Wait a second all that kid has to do is finish their season. Lol

OP said the new redshirt rule would only be for freshmen. So, the medical redshirt rule will hopefully be retained for upperclassmen.

They should at least allow someone who loses two seasons to injury to take a medical redshirt for the second injury. If a guy plays in four games as a freshman and then tears his ACL the following August, not allowing a medical redshirt would leave him with three years, which is what he'd have without the proposed rule, because he would currently lose a year for the four games but get a medical redshirt. But, if he tears the other ACL the next year, it would be a shame for him to just continue losing eligibility.

Is that defined in a more detailed way? I'm thinking along the lines of;
Player A; plays 4 full quarters in games 1, 3, 4, & 9. Eligible for a red shirt?
Player B; plays only 1 play in games 1, 2, 3, 7, & 9.
Ineligible for a red shirt?
I know the above quote says 4 games, just curious of the "definition" of game.

So you could also rest your starters for 4 "easier" games and retain red shirts for the fr ? Will the RS fr be able to start and play 4 full games?

It would clearly help with depth specifically on special teams. You could have true freshman covering punts and kicks on a limited basis instead of JRM, Sutton, etc. I know that opens up opportunities for mistakes but I'd rather them make a mistake against TTU, Ohio, etc. than continuing to use starters on special teams.

I think if they are going to make changes to red shirts, I think they need to be collared polos. The red t shirts look tacky.
