Analysis of each team's chances at the Sugar Bowl on SDS:

If there’s any remaining drama to be wrung out of the regular season, it’s essentially the race for second place, and for the automatic bid to the Sugar Bowl that comes with it. Even when it’s not hosting a playoff semifinal, the Sugar still holds a traditional place of pride for the SEC, like the Rose Bowl does for teams in the Big Ten and Pac-12, as the longstanding destination for the conference champ. This year, like last year, the presumptive SEC champ has bigger fish to fry. But there are still five teams plausibly in the running for the league’s ticket to New Orleans, listed here in order of best position (that is, the team with the most control over its postseason options) to worst:

1. Florida. Don’t worry: I’m not about to suggest Florida has a real chance to upset Bama, or even to score on Bama without considerable help from the defense and special teams. In clinching the East, though, the Gators moved to the front of the runner-up line with fewer losses (two) and the highest non-Bama ranking this week (13th) in both the AP and Coaches’ polls. That’s a very different vibe for a team that entered the weekend ranked 21st, decimated by injuries, and pegged as a two-touchdown underdog in hostile territory.

That could all change very quickly this weekend in Tallahassee, of course, where Florida is a seven-point dog against FSU and no closer to filling the holes in the depth chart. Still, given how far the Seminoles have strayed from preseason expectations, another scrappy, defensively driven upset on the road is hardly out of the question. Neither is a reasonably competitive effort in Atlanta, which (assuming a win over Florida State in this scenario) would leave the Gators with a compelling Sugar Bowl case at 9-3. That’s not likely, as the point spreads suggest. But the opportunity is in front of them.

2. Auburn. For Auburn the equation is straightforward: Beat Bama to move to 9-3, and — barring an even more unlikely upset by Florida seven days later — the Sugar Bowl awaits. How much stock you’re willing to put into that scenario is up to you, but I’ll have more on the Tigers’ chances in Tuscaloosa later in the week.

3. Texas A&M. A&M’s standing with the committee is a little tougher to gauge: After two weeks of listening to complaints that they were overrated in the playoff rankings, the Aggies plunged an incredible 17 spots last week, from No. 8 to 25, on the heels of their third consecutive conference loss. Even with a couple of cupcake wins mixed in to stave off a full-blown losing streak, the old “November Swoon” narrative is back in full force.

As quickly as it fell, though, a win on Thursday night against LSU could send A&M’s stock back in the right direction, and also force the committee to reassess a résumé that includes head-to-head wins over (hypothetically) LSU, Auburn, and Tennessee. That last one is crucial, because for reasons I don’t understand the Vols leapt six spots ahead of A&M last week in spite of their loss in College Station. If both teams finish 9-3, that order will be much harder to justify.

4. Tennessee. Admittedly, I seem to be in the minority in that assumption: Based on most of the snap bowl projections this weekend (including our best guess here at SDS) the Vols have the inside lane on New Orleans, needing only to a) Beat Vanderbilt this weekend, b) Watch Bama take care of business against Auburn and Florida, and c) Maintain their edge over A&M in the final playoff poll. The first two items on that list are very likely; the third is trickier, unless the Aggies render the question irrelevant by losing to LSU.

So yes, as it stands, Tennessee looks like the safest Sugar Bowl bet. Whether that would be enough to absolve Butch Jones for failing (again) to win a ripe-for-the-picking East Division is an open question.

5. LSU. At 6-4 with losses to Auburn and Florida already on the books, it’s probably safe to rule out the Tigers from the New Year’s Six conversation altogether.

So it seems like we have an excellent shot at celebrating New Year's eve in New Orleans. Would you guys go if TN makes it to the Sugar Bowl?

Do you think a bid to the Sugar Bowl and a win is enough to help turn the overall view of the program to a positive position for recruiting?

Also, does it seem to you that the author of this article was frustrated with the fact that TN had the best shot at the sugar bowl or was that just me?

Only Sugar Bowl Scenario I see is us watching another SEC school play in it. Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to back into it, but it is not likely.

Why do you think it's not likely? Do you see UF beating FSU or Bama? Do you see Auburn beating Bama?

I assume you see us beating Vandy right?

I think we can beat Vandy, but we DON'T control our destiny. That is where we will fail. I see at least 1 if not 2 (other than Bama) teams ending the year ranked ahead of us...likely FLa and A&M.

That's the long and short of it....we're in the position to be reliant on others losing to get there. Just like the SEC Championship game.

Am I the only one getting tired of that fact?

It doesn't matter how we get there. A sugar bowl is what it is. If I remember correctly, few years back, in the SEC game against LSU, UGA had a backdoor entry to Sugar if we beat LSU. We did not and they did not make the Sugar.

I don't see things breaking the Vols way anymore than I counted on LSU knocking off FL so we could back into ATL. Too many variables need to come into play for it to happen IMO.

Florida needs to lose both remaining games.

Auburn needs to get humiliated in the Iron Bowl where funny things tend to happen. For no logical reason whatsoever, I think they have a punchers chance against Bama.

I think the shine has worn off Ogre at LSU and the Aggies will handle them.

You can't spell CITRUS without Butch's Champions of Life.

I'm going to enjoy watching FSU beat the gators and then watch the Tide abuse them...probably shut them out and hang close to 50 on 'em...

Auburn goes down Saturday...hopefully they don't lose their QB for the bowl game but he's going to take some shots from that D...

TAMU vs LSU is just a weird game to predict...it could be a close game or a blow out and that could go either way...

We could end up Sugar...we definitely have the fan support to sell out and that's something that matters to the bowl committee...not that they would put any pressure on the ranking committee...

I haven't been to NO since before Katrina...it might be a fun trip. But we're going to play a team better than we are...

Probably, I don't get on here as much as many others, so there is a good chance I miss some threads.

I'm just going to sit back and enjoy our final game of the regular season, hopefully they won't make it too stressful against Vandy. But wherever we end up going to a bowl game I'll be there. Go Vols!

I think I sat in front of this guy this past Saturday. ***** and moan the whole first half. My 9 year old son turned around and asked him if he was for Mizzou and his wife laughed and told my boy that down deep he was a UT fan. My son said "not like my dad". I have never been prouder of him. Point is, quit all the negativity people. Other then crapping the bed against SC it has been a good year.

I will give you TAMU but I don't see Florida doing anything more than beating LSU. I don't think they beat FSU in Doak and they definitely won't beat Bama. TAMU might throw a wrench in it but don't think Florida will.

So if Ohio St beats Michigan which I suspect they will with the qb situation for wolverines. Penn St goes to big 10 championship. I'm assuming Ohio St still gets in playoff. So winner of Penn st/Wisconsin as big 10 champ heads to rose bowl. Do we see Michigan vs Tennessee in the Sugar? Or is their a 2 team per conference limit to playoff/major bowls?

Talk is we would get the winner of Bedlam if we make the Sugar Bowl.

I would LOVE to play Oklahoma or Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.

As others have said, I don't know if I see it happening. We'll just be doing a lot of waiting and seeing with so many other teams. Even still, I could see Tennessee getting screwed by the rankings or the Sugar Bowl selection itself, even if we do everything right and the other teams lose.

Wasn't me chief. I spent Saturday with my 2 Cub Scout Sons walking the neighborhoods in the 40 mph winds and temperatures in the 30s picking up canned foods (Scouting for Food) to give to the food banks. I spent the afternoon at my son's birthday party. I watched the game when I got finished taking care of things that actually matter (late that night on DVR). I know what is important.

the sugar bowl is obligated to the SEC team with the best conference record. By beating vandy UT has 3 losses. UF losing to bama gives them 3 losses but we have head to head win against them. Auburn loss to bama and A-M loss to LSU gives the VOLS 2nd best record behind Bama which is in the playoffs. I don't really know the implications of the UF vs. FSU game or the impact it would have on the decision. A lot of unlikely scenarios are taking place quite fast here lately so it's anyone's guess. I like the VOLS chances to get the sugar bowl bid. The opponent Oklahoma if they beat OSU this weekend. GBO....beat Vandy!

Both of those would be intriguing. Big Game Bob who we lost twice to. And Mike Gundy who worked us for a raise at Okie St.

Good thing is I think we could score with either of them. Bad thing is I'm not confident at all our defense could get a stop or two needed to win the game lol

OU lost to a very good Houston team to start the year and then lost to Ohio State. They haven't lost a game since September 17 and I was up in Morgantown WV this past weekend to watch a butt whooping from Oklahoma. They would be a scary team to face right now.
