Such a Wonderful Sight!

Im not saying he can't do it! I'm saying that a great recruiting class is all well and good, but to call out fans who were "skeptical" with the hire is a little much. The "where are you now?" stuff deserves a little dose of perspective.

Here is some perspective for you...it is not "just the recruiting". We just had one of the all-time best seasons in our program's history and that was after the shared title you seem to be throwing shade at for some unknown reason.

You act like that one unattainable thing isn’t the whole point of collegiate and professional sports lol. He needs to win a conference tourney and get to a final four (especially with how committed UT is to basketball).

You act like Barnes cannot get it done which is odd given where we are at this point with regard to his record of player development and current level of recruiting...lol

He's not saying he can't. It's more, he's had the talent before and needs to start beating ranked teams and higher seeds in the tourneys with it. i agree with that. We all want papaw's swan song to be a Natty.

He was 3-5 vs ranked teams in 2018-19, with 3 of those 5 losses coming in OT.

He was 3-2 vs ranked teams in 2017-18, both losses coming to top-10 teams by a total of 11 points.

So, in 2 years, Barnes is 6-7 vs ranked teams. It's not like he's just embarrassed himself and his team in those matchups. Can we hope for some better tournament success? Sure we can. I think an increase in top-end talent will assist in those matchups and those vs ranked teams. Remember, we have suffered some pretty extreme misfortune in both NCAAT losses. An off-balance, last second rim shot and a VERY questionable foul call have ended our seasons two years running. If just one of those two goes our way, we are,at a minimum, either talking about back-to-back S16s or our 2nd ever E8 appearance.

Also, how many of those losses were on the road. It makes a big difference, even for the blue-bloods.

I did some research across 5 other coaches over the past 2 seasons.

Tom Izzo was the best of the 5 I chose at random. He was 14-4 vs ranked teams over that time, yet lost 5 games last season alone to unranked teams.

Bill Self was 16-8 vs ranked opponents.

Roy Williams was 13-11.

Bruce Pearl was 8-6.

John Calipari was 8-9.

It would seem that Barnes is right there on the back end of some elite coaches at 6-7. Actual coaching and development may favor him a decent bit if you consider the perceived talent discrepancy based on recruiting rankings of the other 5 schools to Tennessee's.

I see 6-9 in those 2 seasons if you count tourneys where it counts more. I'm perfectly satisfied with what he's done so far, but if you want F4s and Natties he'll have to start beating the top 10s(more Gonzagas, UNCs, Novas, etc) and higher seeds.
PS actually in 17-18 he beat ky twice(2-1) which would raise him to 5-3 and a final of 8-9 which is a lot better than his previous history. Maybe he is getting better.

I'm talking strictly about record vs Top-25 teams, some of which came in the NCAAT. And UK was not ranked when we lost to them in the SECT in 17-18.
