Bobby Kotick, CEO and President of Activision Blizzard was quoted last week saying that if he could make one change for Activision, it would be to create an online world for Call of Duty. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, Kotick said that doing so would give players a much more " compelling experience" in addition to really satisfying "the interests of the customers".
When asked what he would like at the snap of a finger, Kotick said "I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow. When you think about what the audiences interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world.
"I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience. I think our audiences are clamoring for it. If you look at what theyre playing on Xbox Live today, weve had 1.7 billion hours of multiplayer play on Live. I think we could do a lot more to really satisfy the interests of the customers.
"I think we could create so many things, and make the game even more fun to play. We havent really had a chance to do that yet, so that would be my snap of the fingers."
When asked if such a concept was indeed coming, Kotick only replied "hopefully".
Call of Duty to go subscription – Eventually
When the Wall Street Journal asked Bobby Kotick If you could snap your fingers, and instantly make one change in your company, what would it be, and why? Kotick responded by stating:
I would have Call of Duty be an online subscription service tomorrow. When you think about what the audiences interests are and how you could really satisfy bigger audiences with more inspired, creative opportunities, I would love to see us have an online Call of Duty world. I think our players would just have so much of a more compelling experience.
He later went on to state that players were clamoring for it and Activision would be able to do a lot more to really satisfy the interest of the customers.
Is Kotick discussing the long rumored Call of Duty MMO, or is this a possible move to turn the standard series into a subscription model with a longer support range and free upgrades? We all know Kotick can be a little out of touch when he speaks, do we really want to pay monthly for Call of Duty? I dont remember asking for that. A CoD MMO to replace WW2 Online and Planetside, might be in order however.
As some may remember Kotick is noted as previously stating at a Morgan Stanley Technical Conference in 2008:
when you think about other properties that we own and control, like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment, and how do you monetize that,
Are the plans soon coming to fruition?
