Stupidest Rule in Football

Why not try not fumbling near the end zone???
Well that would work also. Just always seemed a little bizarre to me to give a change of possession when there was no fourth down attempt and the other team never regained possession of the ball in any way in the field of play.

Why?

A team drives down the field, fumbles in the opponents end zone, and so we give the other team 2 points and the ball back?

I'm okay with just giving the other team the ball back.

Seems fair.[/QUOTE
No safety in this situation

BC didn't take that safety on purpose.
Nope, they weren't smart enough, but they took advantage. Think about had it been 4th down and they took the safety, that would have been criminal especially if they had been on the 20 and run backwards into the endzone. Kind of like intentionally fouling the last minute in basketball, giving up points only to extend the game. How often does that result in a win rather than a 2 point loss becoming a 10 point loss.

Interception in the end zone then kneel down is a touchback. The defense should have to get it out of the end zone to avoid a safety
Hah, hah. So intercepting in the end zone cost you 2 points and you have to give the ball back too?

Don’t forget the option of returning it for a TD or to your own 5 and then let the offense take over.

2 is better than 6.

I'm not sure I follow.

BC "took advantage" of the safety to the extent that they still had an opportunity to retain possession with the onside kick. But, in pure mathematical terms, they were much better off trying to put together a 96 yard drive. The score didn't really matter, because they needed a TD either way. But the odds of recovering the onside kick are less than 1 in 4. Retaining possession was infinitely more important than a <25% chance of getting 25 yards of field position.

Except 2 also comes with kicking from your own 20, meaning the other team is going to go into business with great field position. So there's a really good chance that 2 becomes 9 before your offense ever comes back onto the field.

This is a really dumb idea.

Then don’t pick it. Keep the guys thinking about the situation.
