What about John Chavis? Defensive minded coaches win in the SEC, and that's exactly what he is. I'm sure he'd rather be a head coach than a D. Coordinator as well.. But I haven't heard his name mentioned so I assume there's something bad to be said on him.

He woud be an upgrade if worst comes to worst. Doesn't reallly inspire confidence in me though. I don't --and I'm sure I will get some negative comments for saying this-- see him as a high iq guy.

I see your point, but there's a reason he's never been an HC. I just don't think his personality and coaching style is suited for being an HC, especially at SEC level.

I think the HC has to be a big time recruiter. He is the one who gets the kid to come onboard with that final visit. Chavis has never been a recruiter and does not care to do it. I would take Fulmer back before Chavis. Of course with where we are today, a Fulmer/Chavis return would put us in alot better shape to compete.

He was a solid DC for most of his career. But he also had amazing talent to work with, and squandered that many times.

He's not a recruiter, either.

no way. might as well go with cutcliff if we're looking for a good coordinatior. A head coach has to wear a lot of hats. mainly recruiter. But aslo motivational speaker to the team when necesssary. stratagizing and trying to determine what our best personell options are against to opponet. The coordinator just calls plays

Is that all a coordinator does? Man I need that job.

Worse thread of the year imo. I don't ever, ever want to read a thread where any combination of Fulmer, Cutcliff and Chavis are mentioned along with head coach at UT. This thread had all three mentioned. Although Mike Hamilton didn't quite understand it - no one was ever clamoring to hire Fulmer and there is a reason why he is not coaching somewhere today. Chief is exactly where he needs to be at DC for LSU - nice guy but not a recruiter and not polished enough to be a head coach at a major university - Cutcliff will make someone a good OC once Duke realizes that they will never win more than 3 games with him at the helm. Cutcliff is another one that is not a good recruiter. To compete with who we have to compete with year end, year out you have to -- have to -- have to recruit at the highest level.

And before you say it --- I know there are one or two schools annually that "coach em up" but those are rare exceptions.
