Student Attendance

Bad economy=poor ticket sales /thread

Re-read the article. Schools are selling the tickets, students are buying them; they are just not showing up. How can that be the fault of a bad economy?

Not only that, several of the schools mentioned still do not charge for student admission. Take Georgia Tech, students there can get into any athletic competition for free with just their student id. There is no extra cost other than what you already pay to be at school.

Winning will bring excitement out of the dorms and into the stands.

Not according to the ESPN article. Oklahoma went 10-2 and had weak student attendance.

I think the key thing I took away was time of the game. UT-Chattanooga was our best game attended by students? UTC is not a big-time opponent, the primary issue there is the game was in the evening.

Wasn't the UTC game on Pay-Per-View? Then the students had to choose between going to the game or not getting to see it.

The problem is when the game is available on TV, the alternative to the game day experience is watching it at home while a more competitive game can also be put on another TV or watched during halftime and commercial breaks. Also, students would have instant access to other game scores using their computers or phones connected to wifi at home instead of fighting 100,000 other fans to get limited mobile network access on their smart phones.

Everyone knows the cost of attending games, fans across the nation are watching games at home. But there's nothing like being in the stadium on game day.
I don't know about that. I have done both, and actually enjoy the game from home more. No waiting in line for a bathroom, food or drink. No obnoxious fans. Better view and more comfortable seat. No traffic jams, etc, etc.:loco:

Good point, but then that begs the question would the SEC be better off without the big TV package? Could you make up that money with more seats sold and pay-per-view prices? It's not going to happen of course, just makes you wonder if the SEC network might not be the best route to go?

They need to make them free again like when I was there

Or put them back into student fees and just tell the students that they are included.

Picture this: You are a student and its $15 for a single game ticket. TN is either playing Austin Peay or Alabama. Are you going to spend that $15 on beer for the night or are you going to go watch a boring game (most likely - but always a chance to be entertaining)

Despite how sad it is that kids today need access to their phones even when they are watching a live football game, I do agree that adding a few cell towers or wifi would be a great plus. Although, I am not sure how much it would cost to provide cell service amplification or wifi to 100k fans

No, I don't think you could make up the money by selling tickets. The TV contracts tend to be pretty big and they're getting larger.

I agree with your thought process, though, that the TV contracts are part of the attendance problems.

The Tampa Bay Rays don't draw squat as far as attendance but their TV are fairly large in comparison. Yes, baseball and football are much different animals with the number of games (1 per week vs 6-7).

I'm in college,a dn I have the answer. It's the scheduling of these damn games. We had mostly 12:00 games, one 3:30 game, and one night game this year. Fact is, when you're hungover as F you really need motivation to get up and go to an early game (unless it's a hyped one, but those are usually later). So many football games on TV just makes it so easy to be lazy and not go to the games, especially when it's not your last season

Look I understand the cost of school and working 2 jobs to make it. I'm sorry but $10 for a game is not High prices.

I believe when the amount of a product increases and the demand is low the price decreases. Seeing as how there are roughly 12,000 allotted seats for students that are not being filled to capacity it would make more sense to lower the price. I could be wrong.

If UT wants to strictly make money they can either decrease the amount of seats in the student section or win some damn games.

My God, how did every student from 1900 to about 10-15 years ago find out other football scores b4 smart phones? Oh yeah, I remember - SCORES OF INTEREST announcements over PA and on scoreboard. How did those blue hairs figure that out?
