Don't bother asking Steve Stripling if there's a danger of overlooking Appalachian State, Tennessee's opening opponent. You might as well ask if there's a danger of overlooking Alabama.

"There's two coaches on this staff who will never have to worry about that," UT's defensive line coach said. "Because we were both at Michigan when (Appalachian State) beat us."

Stripling and UT offensive coordinator Mike DeBord were assistant coaches on Lloyd Carr's staff when the unthinkable happened in Ann Arbor, Mich. Appalachian State upset Michigan 34-32 on its home field in the 2007 season opener.

I wasn't worried about App St...until now. I had forgotten that 2 of our current coaches were coaching Mich at that time.

Not overlooking is good and should be preached but this is not the Appalachian State team of 07. That team was coached by Jerry Moore who was a really good coach. The Mountaineers had a 13 game post season win streak that ended in 08 to put into context how good they were when they beat Michigan. They could have played with most teams and on some Saturdays beaten a bunch under CJM. You look at last year's 10-2 record and say they are decent Sun Belt team. I agree. That is exactly what they are. A decent Sun Belt team that is going to get demolished on September 1st.

That Michigan win was nine years ago! To say it's old news is an understatement at best. Other than as a conversation starter to fill up the interminable offseason, I don't see much reason for bringing the subject up.

I do believe that win at Michigan ranks as one of the top ten college football upsets ever. I just don't think it means anything when discussing the upcoming App at UT game.

Hopefully, we'll hold our own. Tennessee has one of the best teams it's had in what seems like ages. App has a solid team that should be at or near the top of the Sun Belt. There's still a significant difference between the top of the Sun Belt and the upper portion of the SEC.

Bottom line - UT wins and AppFan82 goes home happy for the start of another season of college football.

Tennessee should be able to run the football down their throat and then some, Appalachian St had better tighten their chin straps as well as their jock straps.

The Mountaineers just may not find the kind of welcome they are looking for, up on Rocky Top.
