"The money generated from the football program funds approximately 85 percent of our budget and allows all our student-athletes – men and women – to have the opportunity to compete on a national level while achieving academic success, and allows us to continue to be one of a handful of college athletic programs that is self-sufficient and a great partner for the university."

All you band wagon bball fans who think UT will ever become a basketball school lay off the crystal meth...

And all you who think 8-4 and 9-3 is just fine need to realize that continued average success will hurt the department.

I agree VIA, was just pointing that out to all the fairweather bball fans who think UT is a bball school now...as much as I loved the success this year and feel the Pearl is going to have continued success some don't need to be so crazy and act as if football is now 2nd tier on the Hill...

Even at basketball schools like Kentucky the football program raises the most revenue.

85% for football. I thought the money collected from being on ESPN,CBS surely raked in more than 15%.

i know this much, the past 3 years, the bball team hasn't been the money pit it was the previous decdade. any real revenue generated from bball is gravy on top.

there's no way all three programs being successful, filing arenas and stadiums and participating in post season play regularly doesn't help the big picture.

Kentucky Revenue:

Football: $21,898,082
Basketball: $12,439,597

UNC football also makes more than UNC basketball, Same for UCLA, Same for Indiana...

I fail to understand the intent of the original post.

A newly-renovated and phenomenal TBA is now filling to near capacity, all of the high-dollar boxes sold almost immediately, we are "on" the national radar, Pearl is nearing Bobby Knight status on media attention (albeit for much different reasons), we have an incredible class of incoming commitments/signees, and we just had one of the most successful seasons in UT hoops history.

Our football program is now a decade-removed from any sort of title (don't give me this "Regular Season SEC East Champion" crap), threw (literally) away it's chance at a BCS bid, is facing growing pains with a new offensive staff, and has produced mediocre results in recruiting, which has always been one of its strongest suits.

I don't really see it as a competition, nor do I understand why it should be. However, if you are looking for excitement, the BB program is one of the hotbeds in the country, while the FB program has our head coach listed as a "hot seat."

Hmmm... I guess this kind of blows away the myth that because there is a women's AD, that the women's programs are self-sufficient.

Sums up my sentiments perfectly.

I don't think that number means much unless we see the budget. Football brings in 85% of the revenue and probably spends 80% of the revenue. Costs a lot of money to field a football team. Profit and loss is the only measuring stick.

I don't see how this is really possible.

But hey, put 100,000 seats in TBA and Bball would make twice as much as football.:p

The only self-sufficient women's program we have is our basketball team, and they barely do it. Also, we have a women's Athletic Director her name is Joan Cronan.
