You have to think that this only helps us in Memphis. Here are some tweets from players and others who know what he is on the recruiting trail. From the way it sounds he was a beast on the trail.

@JohnMartinCA 11h

Players Damon Stoudamire is, in some capacity, responsible for: Shaq Goodwin, Markel Crawford, Geron Johnson, Pookie Powell, Nick King.

@JohnMartinCA 11h

Markel Crawford, last October: "I'd say 80-85 percent of (my commitment) was because of coach Stoudamire."

@JohnMartinCA 11h

Austin Nichols on Stoudamire's departure: "Shocked."

@JohnMartinCA 11h

More Austin Nichols: "I'd heard he might leave, but I didn't think he would. Damon was my guy. I'm just shocked."

@JohnMartinCA 11h

Premier recruits Damon was working (or assisting with) in 2014/2015/2016: Larry Austin Jr., Lawson twins, Skal Labissiere

After two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis, Damon Stoudamire is returning to his alma mater, Arizona.

The 39-year-old former Wildcats star accepted an offer Sunday to fill the vacant assistant coaching position at Arizona under coach Sean Miller.

Stoudamire, who played a major role in Memphis’ landing a 2013 recruiting class ranked No. 2 in the nation, is the second Memphis assistant to leave the program this offseason. Former assistant Jimmy Williams, the Tigers’ big men’s coach, left last month to pursue other opportunities.

Hopefully he carries his Mary Jane in something other than aluminium foil now.

Stoudamire leaving is a significant hit to Memphis, but has nothing to do with UT. We will be fine though. The one thing Pastner does better than 99% of everyone else is recruit, players and coaches. He got Aki Collins and Frank Matrisciano when everyone said there was no chance of either. He'll bring in someone capable.

If it hurts Memphis' recruiting, then likewise, it helps those who are recruiting against them. Last time I checked Tennessee was one of those.

Losing Calipari didn't open any recruiting doors to Memphis for UT....

In order to recruit Memphis, UT has to put a brand on the floor that will attract Memphis kids. Stokes came, others will as long as they see UT as a winning program. The pressure those kids have to play for Memphis is tremendous. And there is a strong UT dislike in the Bluff City. Some how that might not change, but if Martin can develop a relationship with the coaches in the city and with the parents to high level D1 players he has a chance. Pearls lack or inability to recruit Memphis, not often discussed, may be in part because he came off a light blue leisure suit and white patent leather shoe salesman. And he put a lot of money and resources in the Bluff City area recruiting with no real return on the investment. CCM has to do the same, but his character might be more trust worthy. Time will tell, but Stoudamire's departure may hurt Memphis, not necessarily help UT. Memphis Fan is not sold on Pastner.

How can this news hurt UT in any way? All it can do is help in some way - small or large.

Fwiw I believe John Martin said Damon was the lead recruiter for Skal, the Lawson twins and maybe a few other Memphis kids in upcoming classes...

Yep Bruce was viewed as a car salesman but Cal wasn't? It's a Knoxville Memphis thing. Memphis has envy to every city in the state.

What you really are saying Pear was not the right color white and coach Martin is black is what you are trying to say.:)

I'm also still wondering how Memphis' move into the AAC will affect them. They've been in CUSA & ruling it since Lville & Cincy left, but I can't really see kids getting excited by playing the other schools in that league...looks like the SEC would be a whole lot more attractive, so that could not only help UT, but schools like OM, MSU & Ark

No, because Pastner (who is white) recruits Memphis very well. It's about trust. HS Coaches don't trust you then your task becomes even harder. Pearl was a great salesman when it came to recruiting, but his track record in Memphis speaks for itself. CCM appears on the surface to be a bit more genuine. It has nothing to do with race, but character. But thank you for your comments as you exposed your line of thought to everyone in here.

Umm, he's had 4 recruiting classes as a head coach, 2 of those classes were ranked as the top 5 in the country. Name 10 other coaches that have recruited better in the past 4 years...

A better question is how many top 25 teams has Pasner beat with all that talent on the roster?
