Does anyone own one? I'm thinking about getting one put in my garage, and was wondering what the cost of one is.

They seem to be installing them in the basements of new homes in my neighborhood. They use steel I-beams, rebar and concrete.

I've actually been reading some plans on how to build a blast shelter. It doubles as a storm shelter. Maybe you need to consider the chance of a nuclear holocaust as well as tornadoes.

I dwell on the Northeast side of a hill. It would pretty much have to drop down right on top of the roof for me to take a direct hit and if that happened I am not sure that a shelter would do much good.

I grew up hearing "Chattanooga will never have a tornado, it can't jump the mountain. But if one ever does...." Well, yeah, they can jump mountains. LOL

kind of like them saying that it would never hit a major city, because of all the buildings. then once the tornado hit down town nashville, they quit saying that

If you have a basement, you may not need an actual storm shelter. You live in Alabama, right? It's hard to get an F4 or F5 tornado in Alabama...so I would think a well-constructed basement (good ceiling) would be fine. If you could possibly clear out an area from sharp objects, glass, overhead objects, etc.....that would be going a long way. If a shelter isn't terribly expensive, then you could always go that route - but if they are, you may want to just consider your basement. The floor of a house isn't going to be ripped off in an F3.

I read once that if you lash yourself to a metal pipe and wrap it around your waist you can survive a direct hit from an F5 going right over you. Either i read it or that was Twister, don't reacall.
