Store returns are becoming a bigger hassle

I deal with retailers/resellers and they have told me that returns were minimal in the past.
Over the last few years, the percentage of returns have exploded and the affect on profits has been concerning.
It was inevitable that companies would start pushing back.

I saw a news report on a small independent book store somewhere that had something like an $800 sale a few weeks before Christmas, and in early January the customer returned all of them. The reason for the return was they just used them for part of their holiday decorations. People can be real jerks.

Yes, I saw that story.
It’s a small independent store.
Bad enough that all of the books were returned, but, she may have re-ordered so she is now carrying double inventory.

I placed an order in November for a Christmas present from Amazon. I noticed that they lowered the price before it was even delivered for $25 less and contacted them to see if they would credit my account for the difference, and they just flat out said no, they don't price match even though they were the seller and shipper. When it was delivered, I promptly put in a return for the item and ordered another one. So they ended up paying to ship me the item twice and to return ship it once for their stupidity, and I still paid the lower price. I feel absolutely zero guilt for doing that.
I have since cancelled my Prime service as well since they have gone from a 2 day delivery service to a 5-10 day delivery and I'm not paying for crappy service.

It's been their dumb policy for years and have done the same thing if it's a large reduction. I love when I select return reason: item found at a lower price..on Amazon.

Amazon could just quit taking returns. No law says you have to accept a return for most consumer merchandise. If Amazon stops, everyone else will follow suit.

Yeah, except we also use the Prime service for Prime Video as well. So, I'd be paying for it anyway.

They’d lose a lot of business
I think you're both wrong. I think:
1. Nobody would follow suit, and
2. They wouldn't lose much business.

Life is often just a simple matter of people taking opportunities or not.

Kind of off topic, but back in the 1970s up to maybe the late 80s/early 90s, stores used to have layaway. I wondered back then when I was a kid and even more now how stores handled the storage of and tracking of all of those products. If layaway was as big now as it was back then, imagine how big of a nightmare returns would be.

You kept all of this inventory and space dedicated to sales before Christmas as people pay things off, and then after Christmas you have to worry about returns. WOW...
