UT's biggest concern will be slowing down Stephen Garcia and South Carolina's passing offense. Garcia threw for 355 yards and two touchdowns against Vanderbilt.

The Vols had no answers for Jones on Saturday. South Carolina wide receiver Alshon Jeffery might be even better. The 6-foot-4, 233-pound Jeffery will be a mismatch for UT's defense. How will the Vols slow down Jeffery and the Gamecocks' other big target, Tori Gurley? They probably won't.

UT will once again be dealing with injuries against South Carolina. Cornerback Marsalis Teague is banged up, which could be a serious problem because of the Vols' lack of depth in the defensive backfield.

That said, how does Wilcox attempt to stop Garcia from having a record day against our secondary?

What options does TN have? I say bring the house each play and take a chance on getting burnt deep. At least we get shots on the QB instead of sitting back and getting picked apart. Maybe Garcia will get rattled and throw some picks?

Per SC article -

Stephen Garcia completed 31 of 39 passes for 355 yards. Again, that's somewhat misleading. He missed several open targets in the first half and threw into traffic on several occasions.

Many of his completions to Gurley, Jeffery and Sanders were inside 5 yards, with the Gamecocks taking advantage of Vanderbilt blitzing from the edges of the field.

More from article -

The offense also got a jolt in the second half from senior running back Brian Maddox. With Marcus Lattimore out because of an ankle injury, sophomore Kenny Miles got the start. Miles couldn't get going, and Spurrier and running backs coach Jay Graham turned to Maddox.

Maddox, who repeatedly said he was "devastated" that he didn't get the start over Miles, ran 24 times for a career-high 146 yards and a touchdown. The 2-yard score late in the third pushed USC ahead for good.

"When Brian got his chance, he was making things happen," Spurrier said.

Spurrier said Sunday that Lattimore, who suited up and went through warm-ups but didn't play, has a good chance to play this week against Tennessee. Even with the late improvements, the Gamecocks will certainly welcome back the freshman and his 752 total yards and 12 touchdowns.

So what can Wilcox do to slow down SC and create turnovers to give TN a chance saturday. You have to think 21 points for SC will win it?

We have tolook for South Carolina to pull a South Carolina and keep us in the game. Obviously, if they play like they did against Alabama then we will be blown off the field. If they call fade routes in insane situations and turn the ball over then we have a great chance. They have advantages in talent and experience, but they have proven prone to a collapse for the last few years after good starts.

We won't stop USC. We're #98 in Pass Defense and they're #31 in Pass Offense.

Expect us to be ranked between #105-110 and them to at least rise into the Top 30.

cardassianvol we do have the chicken curse on our side. But I think Wilcox needs to shake up his D a little bit and show Steve something a little diferent to throw him off?

You do know this is USCjr right? As long as the Chicken curse exists TN has a chance.

What would you call if you were Wilcox?

Sadly we just don't have alot of answers on Defense.

If SC comes to play and executes it will be similar to UGA I am afriad.

South Carolina will have their way with our defense. Looking to be ANOTHER blowout because our offense is handicapped by having to start 20 yd line or worse and are unable to do anyhting other than the occassional big play.

We could start by rushing more than 3 people when its 3rd and long.

i don't know what game you were watching but that happened several times. mcelroy's jersey was more green than white at the end of the game. the cb's just couldn't hold up in coverage long enough for them to get the sack.

IMO, if lattimore is still out, that will force USC to be one diminutional (see the ky game) and if we can get pressure on Garcia and get after his a$$ forceing him to make bad decisions with the football causing turn overs we can give ourselves a chance!!

Another key is our O has got to stay on the field long enough to score & give our D a rest to stay fresh and keep the chickens offense off the field.

I don't think there is much left to show. they were already blitzing at every angle. they also slanted and stunted the d-line in every directiont they could. we threw the kitchen sink at bama.

It seems to me that Garcia is prone to doing a good job of stopping himself. Thats about our only chance of stopping the USC offense, a meltdown at the QB position.

The key to slowing Garcia down is to keep him hemmed in the pocket. He is dangerous once he gets outside of the pocket.

Their passing game is based on timing and throwing to a spot. If you disrupte both, you can stop or limit what they do. It is the same approach that the ball coach had at FL.

Just hope Garcia turns into his old self which throws picks and fumbles. Other than that, gonna be yet another long game.

Lattimore will be back from what I am hearing down here (columbia) on the radio. THey dont even think there's a chance of him not playing. So we have to stop the run, like we did in the first half and make Garcia throw. They just have several good weapons this year. A decent Senior QB, a great RB and a great WR. Their DBs are teriible like ours and they are about as bad as us on stopping in critical situations, see KY game. We just have to throw them some crazy looks on D, show blitz a lot, I really liked what our D was doing against Bama, They just got outplayed in the second half. They were definitely confusing the coverage looks for a bit. But our DBs are hurting more than any other thing on our team right now.

Well, and Lincoln, who looks about as hurt as a 10 year old girl who scraped her knee. He needs to come back, Palardys soccer FG tries scare me. the one he hit, came it at a crazy angle, I thought it was gonna shoot to one side on a fade towards the end.
