Stokes

Stokes' work on the offensive glass is what kept us from being beaten 20 points in the last 2 games.
Sadly he plays for a coach that confuses the 3pt shot with the lob pass.
Is he NBA ready? could he make a roster? Highly doubtful.
One more year.

The boy might be sandbagging it. He's got all the tools but looks to be in cruise mode. Is that being lazy or saving himself for the money league. Guess we will see.

Watching him play it seems he is being coached to hold the ball until he is double teamed and then drop the ball to a running for the backdoor cut.
If he is coached to do that instead of taking it one on one to the basket with his size we got some serious coaching problems.

Not meant to be a pot shot, but I don't think Stokes will play pro basketball next year without a passport.

Lets just Agree to Agree on this one. But I would add or any time in the future unless he improves greatly! He must improve his shot and his defense. He might have a better shot in the NFL than the NBA.

What's up with all of this Stokes hate? I mean he did average 12 points and 9.5 rebounds. Is he ready for the NBA, no. But you guys saying that he's Europe bound if he decided to go are wrong IMO. People forget he was pretty much doubled team every play, and he still managed to score. In the NBA he won't be doubled team like he is in college. Stokes has a lot of potential and upside and he is still really young to be a sophomore. A couple things the NBA goes for. He could develop a jump shot in the NBA with the coaching and the unlimited time to practice and with only basketball being his focus and not basketball/school. He has a really good work ethic. Our fans kill me that they talk about the players like they are garbage, when he gave his all to the University of Tennessee. You guys are pathetic.

Stokes had a jumper (watch his first game against UK last year), but Martin coached him against it. Not saying that Martin made a bad call, but it's hard for the guy to develop any sort of jump shot if you're constantly telling him to take it to the rim and stay under the basket.

He could shoot the jumper last year because Maymon was under the basket to get the rebound. Why would you have your best rebounder, shooting a jump shot, with no one under the basket rebounding?

I don't disagree. It was a response to posters saying he needs to develop a jump shot. How can he do that when the team needs and coach dictate against it?

wow...just wow...sure dude can grab boards, but I've never seen a big who struggles with finishing as much as he does. and his ball handling is terrible, throw up the stat that shows his average turnovers per gam.

Theme at UT's campus this past year. Coaches take early entry level pro talent and miss the postseason!

YAAAAY DOOLEY AND MARTIN!

Why does everyone care if he goes to the league or not? According to everyone on here he sucks? Why do we want back someone who averages a double double while being doubled? I swear we have some of the most retarded fans...

Sometimes Stokes acts like he's just going through the motions of trying to play basketball. For him to be drafted he'll have to show more than he showed this year. The NBA wants full-time players and more-rounded (better defensive play along with better offensive play). He's still a raw project in the making.
GO VOLS!

I'm not saying he sucks by any means he is very talented but it's reality and nba scouts and coaches will tell him the same thing. In college everyone kisses these players butts and tells them how special it is in every way. In the league he will be hit with reality and that reality is even as talented as he is he has a long way to go.

Dan Wolken is someone that could know something. Used to write for Memphis Commercial Appeal.

He will at least "test the waters", but he has a tough time now making layups against the likes of Mercer while in traffic. How will he do against players who physically match up to him? He also needs to develop a mid range jumper to get guys off of him.

So many experts here. He will put feelers out to see what his stock is. People forget this kid is basically a freshman who averaged a double double in league play. Scouts have probably seen this so he is gonna check his stock. Doesn't mean he will go. A lot of kids use this to determine what they need to work on the next year.

Stokes is at least a year away and maybe two. Didn't stop Hopson from being stupid - maybe it's the same with Jarnell. Hope not.

As much as I like Zo's character and values I am not seeing any kind of ability to adapt to the actions of the other coaches/players during a game. There seems to be no Plan B. If the four guard system doesn't work he keeps using it except for maybe a two minute stretch with two big guys. Mercer used a classic line-up with mediocre talent and good shooters - and they dominated folks. Stokes physically dominated his guy and still did not score like he should have. He shoots FT's like a middle schooler. After a couple of years you can see he and the rest of the team have hit the ceiling on their improvement - and that falls back on coaching when the talent is there. And the talent is there. The big 3 are one 5* and two 4* with a boatload of experience now. Yet they don't dominate and run it up against inferior opponents.

That big white guy from Mercer dominated him last night, what the he!! is he going to do in the League. He's behind Scotty and way behind where Tobias was at the at the same point in time. It would be career suicide if he left now.

Stokes issue is his favorite player and idol is Carmelo Anthony...that's how he's always envisioned himself, but his body is not meloesque. He needs to embrace he's a big man and that that's where his money is gonna be made, not trying to be a guard.

He needs to look at the evolution of sullinger at OSU. He was really a banger, short jumper his freshman year, same build really as stokes. Offseason worked and stretched out his shot and became a pretty good perimiter shooter which made him much more rounded offensively. With a similar build as stokes he went top 20 in the draft and would've gone higher if not for the back injury.

Stokes and Harris are two different players. Two different styles of play. I remember people saying Harris was a tweener and wasn't athletic enough to play in the league...he looks like he is doing pretty well now for Orlando.

@DraftExpress: Now that Tennessee's season is done, it'll be interesting to see what happens with Jarnell Stokes. Strong indications he'll enter the draft.

I don't know how accurate they are.

naw..he's too slow and doesn't seem very agressive on the court...sometimes he looks like he's almost asleep out there...a bit too much media hype for this young man i believe

He just finished averaging a double-double in the SEC in what should have been his freshman year. What he's good at now wouldn't translate to to the NBA, but that's no reason for the media not to talk about it while he's still here playing college games.

Some players have a set of skills/physical attributes that make them great college players but mean they have no real shot at an NBA career. Chris Lofton was one. Jarnell Stokes might well be another, should he choose to stay another year or two.

He needs to watch Chuck Hayes, instead.
