Stokes to go pro

Those belong to UT, not Stokes iirc

Regardless, he has a minimum of $500 worth of tattoos, and that's assuming someone in the hood did them and not a professional outfit. These kids use the going hungry BS to try and get their point across about not getting paid. When I was at UT these guys were wearing more expensive articles of clothing than me and driving Tahoes and other cars light years ahead of mine all while coming from the hood and me coming from an above average middle-class family.

I guarantee there's not one damn athlete who is literally struggling to eat on a daily basis. If they didn't spend the money they do have on partying, clothes, shoes, tats and jewelry, tacos would come easily.

While I agree. When I quit a job, I dont blast the salary in my resignation letter. I just say "Thanks for the opportunity and looking forward to the next chapter of my life". His comments have overshadowed the event and the topic seems to be his financial situation instead of his career at UT. Just IMO

OK :good!:

For awhile, I gave plasma for money and ate rally burger combos for 99 cents almost everyday before topping it off with ramen noodles. The starving thing is getting old.

UT must've changed their cafeteria hours, because when I was in school there were plenty of nights I went to the Hess Hall cafeteria and got milkshakes from the Ben and Jerry stand at like 10pm. After consuming plenty of late night milkshakes, I not only went to bed not-hungry but put on more lbs. then I would've preferred.

Also, the snack stores on campus stayed open later than 7 and they took what was referred to as "bonus bucks". You buy a meal plan with so many meals per week allotted and so many bonus bucks that could be used for just about anything on campus. I had 15 meals per week and $300 worth of bonus bucks. Hell, I used to buy dip with my bonus bucks when campus still sold tobacco.

One would think the athletes at UT would be given a meal plan that included bonus bucks in addition to their meals. I don't see that being any form of violation because it's something that's afforded to all students as part of a meal plan. On average the meal plans all cost about the same the only thing that fluctuated was meals and bonus bucks. Want more bonus bucks? Then the allotted meals per week are reduced. Want more cafeteria meals? Then you get less bonus bucks.

This going hungry because I can't eat after 7 is BS. Craving a snack and "starving" are complete worlds apart and it appears these athletes are confusing the two. No way coaches and academic personnel keep these kids involved in activities that restrict them from getting to the cafeteria when they're well aware of the "limited" hours.

Or maybe he traded memorabilia for tats?

Funny the word "starving" keeps getting used when Stokes never used that word.

People are using the word starving interchangeably with being hungry. Literally going hungry and not getting enough nutrients is nearly impossible as a college student, and probably even more so as an athlete. Working out late at night and having a craving and wishing you had something is something different. These guys make it sound like they don't have the opportunity to eat 3 filling meals a day, and that's complete BS. Anyone who buys that, should be embarrassed of their naïveté.

He will struggle in the NBA... He is not a leaper and does not have an outside game. Better save his money if he get drafted.

All these NCAA guys complaining about benefits will probably boycott the nba, because they have to pack taxes. Latrell Sprewell "couldn't feed his family" on $14 million.

Most folks go to college to help prepare themselves for a career. Athletes do the same thing, they are just provided a bigger stage and are given more benefits as they prepare for their career in their chosen field. At any time, if they feel used, they can leave and pursue other options. The D league is always an option and they will get paid a salary for that.

The student athletes know what they are signing up for when they come on campus.

This is a double whammy. I like Stokes but I can't see him making a big mark in the NBA--he'll be on the bench for some team, surely--and he's left UT with no chance of being good next year. Can't blame the guy for want to earn some money--but....

If he can just get in the NBA and land a roster spot for two or three years that would equal about 4 to 5 million dollars which is what it is all about. He may also surprise and be a lot better Pro player than most think.

The actual quote says nothing about going hungry here is what he said:

“It’s hard to not make this decision. A wake-up call was when I was a freshman here at UT and the Stokes shirts had sold out and they had just re-stocked it. I walked in there with my whole family and I asked for a free shirt, and I couldn’t get it. “I’ve had certain times where it’s hard to pay cell phone bills, insurance on my car, and it was hard to eat at night at certain times. “I realized there’s a lot of great people around Tennessee that want to help, but they fear the possibility of what could happen.”

I can believe all this is true. There are plenty of people that would help college students with money if it wasn't illegal to do so. He should get money on shirts being sold with his name on it that is only logical. He doesn't even own his name as a college athlete. That is ridiculous.

Does "it was hard to eat at night at certain times" not imply he was hungry? Geez Louise some will play a game of semantics till they're blue in the face.

I guess it depends on now serous he was. You don't think it's possible that he was hungry once in awhile at 2-3am after a workout?

I'm not suggesting he was a meal away from starvation, but I do believe it's possible that there may have been a few nights he didn't have enough money to spend $10-$20 on a good meal.

i really wish Stokes had stayed his senior year. He improved so much this year and I can only imagine what one more year would have done. But he said he is a VFL....and he is. I am not going to get into the other stuff. I wish him nothing but the best and will be cheering for him to make a team. He has represented our University with class....good luck Jarnell!

Yes I'm sure he was hungry at 2-3 am at times. I often was too after a night on the strip, and yes the difference would be I had money to make an early morning run to Krystal's. But not having money to do so should not be a reason to pay athletes. I'm not saying that's what he implied but Napier sure as hell did. The memorabilia and what they choose to do with it should be their choice and their's alone. That's one area I agree with them.

I just don't buy into, and never will, the woe is me attitude that many of them have. The student loan debt that weighs me down month after month makes me envious of what they've been afforded not sorry for them. With that said, I hope he's drafted as high as possible and has a long prosperous career. The more VFL's in the professional ranks the better for our programs overall.

I have no idea why pay autocorrected to pack. Lol

So the google glasses are available to all the students right?

Students can just pick up a pair at the library?

No, they were given to Jarnell to wear for the post game in conjunction with the Vols NCAA Diaries videos that were being produced....is there an issue with that?

I never understand people on volnation...
"he will be garbage in the nba "
"he'll be overseas in less than a year"
"better save the money Stokes, you won't be in the league long "

I know this is hard some on here, but how about we get behind our players and support them. Instead of downing him, get behind him and congratulate him that he is getting a chance to accomplish his dream. People didn't think Hopson would ever get a shot at the league...lol yeah. People said CJ Watson wouldn't ever stay in the league...lmao and people said Tobias Harris had no position in the league. He was too small for the 4 and to slow for the 3...yep they were right...not. So how about for once we get our head out of our asses and we support our players.

Ps: If he sucks so bad or isn't good enough, why do you want him back for another year?

It's the same thing as when a recruit commits elsewhere. People want them here, and can't deal with their emotions. Lol

The craziest thing on here is people apparently don't realize that players can go overseas and get paid more than most people make here at their jobs. There is money besides just in the NBA.

I think I read somewhere that Bobby Maze was making $200,000 a year. And people over there love their American basketball players haha
