Stokes to go pro

If NBA scouts and GMs think his prodigious rebounding will translate to the NBA, despite his lack of size and athleticism, then Stokes is at worst a late first-rounder in any year. If GMs don't think his rebounding will translate now, then nothing that he does next year would change that. Coming back and spending another year being double-teamed and mugged down low isn't going to do anything to enhances his case. He might as well go now and start getting paid.

I tend to agree. I can't see him improving his stock much from where it is now. As much as I'd like to see him back, I think it's the right decision.

His draft position stands to improve more than his stock. But both should improve which definitely would give him a better shot at the first round and guaranteed money

Good luck to him, in the long run the more guys we can get in the NBA the better. 5 stars like to go places where they see other 5 stars make the league. Hope he sticks, I can't imagine his stock will ever be higher after the tournament he just had.

Yes, that is a good idea, however if our players try to go pro but don't get drafted, a rival school can always use that against us.

kid is a mid 2nd round pick that wont measure even 6'8 and has no 15 foot jumper. i dont know what kind of advice this kid has been getting. at 20 years old theres so much more room to improve.

After his decision to stay last year he gave some interviews that were pretty telling. He was visibly upset that he was not going to the NBA. He seemed shocked at his projections and honestly, he came off as having his feelings hurt. He also came off as being fairly out of touch with his shortcomings.

He's had a great year this year. Remembering those interviews I had no doubt in my mind that he would go pro. It's his dream and its where he wants to be. I also agree that staying another year probably wouldn't help his stock too much. It also seems like every year people say the next year will be a thinner draft.

Yes, as an elite recruit, he was set on the NBA. But they all are, and there isn't anything wrong with that. His cannot overcome his weaknesses because they are almost all physical. Sure, he could work on his 15 foot shot, but his stock is at an all time high.

I agree that we seem to always say that the next year's draft is better. But this draft is truly deep. I thought that this deep draft and his age (he would only be 21 when drafted next year) gave us a chance. But, good luck to him.

I highly doubt that he will be drafted in the 1st round but I do expect that he will be on an NBA roster at the start of next season (though probably not playing much if at all). Whether it is the right choice now or not best of luck to you Jarnell and thanks for being a Vol!

Whether he has a 15 foot jumper is irrelevant to whether he gets drafted. If scouts and GMs think he'll be able to rebound in the NBA, they'll go ahead and pick him and figure he can develop the jumper (especially considering how much he's already improved his FT shooting). If scouts and GMs don't think he'll be able to rebound because of his size/athleticism, he'll never get drafted high no matter what he does next year.

His whole shot at the NBA hangs on what they think about his rebounding, and nothing that he does at UT next year is going to make NBA guys feel any better about it. Might as well start drawing a paycheck instead of going to class.

That's why for his sake I hope he goes to a team like the Sixers... They're gonna stink again next year and still be VERY young so there should be decent playing time available next season for him to develop his game instead of being a seldom used piece on a roster of a better team...

Brett Brown is a good coach in spite of their record and he did a good job of developing players when he was an asst in San Antonio...

The one shortcoming that I thought he really improved upon was finishing around the basket. He was much, much better this year.

I'm sure the NBA would have liked him to develop a mid range jumper, but I had no interest in seeing him take 15 foot shots in a Tennessee uniform.

Couldn't agree more. Good luck to him.
