"We tried to stay away from all the criticism that this team has been receiving throughout the year," Stokes said. "I[f] that's our motivation, then we're in it for the wrong reason.

"We're in it for Tennessee, keeping things positive."

I love this team

This is what we need to hear and see from our team. Excellent.

Jarnell was superb at crunch time last night, making FT and grabbing critical rebounds. The victory was a total team effort, the men in orange played their hearts out.
Way to represent guys!

The implication is that they really could not block out "...all the criticism that this team has been receiving throughout the year. ..." because they did indeed know the criticism has been going on, "throughout the year".

So I ask, how much better would the "esprit de corps" of the team have been? How many more games could have been won; had this team felt they and their coach had our complete support in the regular and now in post-season play?

Team spirit IS greatly affected by fan support, and productivity IS greatly affected by team spirit.

Instead of support, they got and are still getting, the constant low, and sometimes thunderous, rumble of negativity, "throughout the year". Amazing they even made it to the dance. Especially after a few of the games in the middle of the season when team spirit seemed to collapse during games. I credit Coach Zo with holding them together.

I believe Zo has already earned his extension to even be able to recruit. Others are going to believe he has to beat Duke and Zhevissheffissky (-2 sp), and others will never be satisfied unless we could have a lying carnival hawker like Bruce Pearl running sideshows while coaching. It's what they want.

Lol at the attempted spelling of Coach K. Yea that's right, I didn't attempt it.

Coach K needs to buy a vowel and I think duke is vulnerable. Hope our guys get to play 'em . :clapping:

I mostly agree with your comments. Great last paragraph on Zhevissfisskysky. Of course, this kind of criticism and impatience goes on everywhere in life and at other schools. Still, the good lesson is that patience and a steady hand will likely win out over the long haul (as opposed to a carnival sideshow which burns fast and bright).

There have still been great turnouts at TBA all year, especially given the state of the program. If the boys think fan support was bad here, I wonder how they would have liked playing in front of Auburn's average home crowd of 16 people.

I think we can beat Duke. I believe they are soft in the middle. If guards can hit some three's also it will be a long day for Dukeeeee. I picked us to win three games before losing, so lets handle UMASS now

GO VOLS

There was tremendous fan support after losing to crappy UTEP, aTm and Vandy. Four games that would have greatly improved the seeding in the tourney, but more importantly, proved to the fan base that the team was focused and the coaching staff could get it done. Despite that most fans kept supporting and attending at TBA - an arena that seats twice as many people as the max capacity of most other programs in America.

In all fairness, when you play that wishy-washy for 4/5 of the season in a "no excuses" kind of year, it's going to draw some criticism. I'm glad they've been able to turn it int motivation though. The 2nd half of last night's game looked truly inspired for the most part

Good to hear. I couldn't imagine being on a stage like these young guys with the constant fire Martin/ Hire Pearl talk and underachieve all season. They are in the dance and playing well...it's amazing.
